Baseboard/Casing/Wainscoting

We are replacing all baseboards and casings. Our ceilings are mostly 8' except for the entry and family room which are 16' in an open concept and connects to other rooms that are 8'. I can't go any larger than a 2 1/2" casing as many of our doors are so close to the wall it doesn't allow for anything larger. I'd like to go up to a 5 1/4" baseboard and wondering if proportionally that would look okay or should I stick with something 4 - 4 1/2"?

  • Can a colonial baseboard look okay with a craftsman flat casing? (Doors are raised 2 panel square top).
  • Can a craftsman style flat baseboard w/flat casing look okay with a traditional crown molding?
  • Wainscoting - Can both a craftsman style wainscoting and pencil frame molding wainscoting be used in different rooms in a house?
