whether they can be affected by moving cold wind.. is a different issue ...

Actually Ken, do we know for certain that plants can't feel things? Wasn't there some book on trees not too long ago that talked about how trees respond to other trees https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/sep/12/peter-wohlleben-man-who-believes-trees-talk-to-each-other

Anyway Alan -- you noticed the effects of wind and ? cold on plant tissue (not sure how cold it got by you but we had a hard freeze the other night). When we "harden off" plants we gradually get them acclimated to the outside environment, although high winds can decimate soft plant tissue regardless - hot dry winds can really do a number.

Wasn't specific to the polar v that cropped it. I planted these a month ago....we've had a small handfull of days where's it been cold. No hard freezes though. I expected the annuals would not have been happy with the earlier planting...

Was just surprised when I peeked inside the current bulb bed (about 200+ on each side) flanking the drive entrance, the annuals that were obscured by the Dense bulb foliage were unfazed at all.

The ground warms up during the day and loses heat at night. While it's radiating heat at night it can either escape rapidly from bare soil out in the open, even faster in a wind, or it can be slowed down in a sheltered location. In the tangle of your plantings enough of the warmer air was likely trapped and kept your plants protected.
