Hi - I just planted 2 Edens next to a new arbor that get dappled shade much of the day at the lower level due to 3 foot hedges on either side. They came as 2 ft tall stripped bareroots - it's been two weeks and I haven't seen any leaf growth yet. Getting worried. Once they are about 3 feet tall they will have direct or lightly dappled sunlight for much of the day all the way up the 8-10 foot arbor. Maybe I should have planted them in a pot and let them grow taller in direct sun since the first couple of feet of their spots are so shady due to the hedge. I was hoping to avoid having them bleach out as we are in GA and our afternoon direct sunlight is brutal.

@Liz Bell Could you possibly dig them up and put them into pots? You are quite right to go for the part-shade in order to avoid bleaching-out,but it probably would be best if they could get started out in pots, to gain some size and strength first.

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) Can you show a photo of how you configured your 12 foot rebar trellis for climbing roses?

Hi westes, I don’t have pics but it was just 5 rebar poles spaced about 4 feet apart (So the structure was about 4 ft in diameter)).. The rebar were strong enough to stand on their own, nothing was required to tie them together.. I wrapped the canes as horizontally as possible and spaced them as best I could, the canes are big ,stiff,, and numerous.. Once Eden leafted out the rebar was obscured,, but it didn’t look so good in winter.

I agree , I like to pot young roses so they get the possible light, soil and nutrition,, then set them to their permanent location when they are stronger.
