Good job with removing that overgrowth. You need to really think about the heights of different plants so what you want are mostly tall at the back and of course short at the front. I would plan on the box woods along the walkway and then use this as a inspiration for the foundation plantings . Iwould also do a railing on that porch that is just enough drop off the break an ankle.
