Jemma, what Sheila said is correct. Here is an example of Pinkerbelle rose. The first pic is from my garden and the second pic is from the tag of the rose.

I noticed this often happens with roses that have blending colors. Pinkerbelle in my garden has less sun. The one from the tag has too much sun.

I think your grocery pink rose with light green on the edges probably had less sun in the greenhouse. Since it's in a pot, move it around in the garden until it gives you the color combination that you are looking for. If it was me, I would move it to a morning sun only location to see if it helps.

Regarding to food coloring of the rose blooms, they often do that for the bigger blooms and for cut flowers. For example, blue or black roses currently don't exist so they cut a white rose stem and put the stem in the container with food coloring and the bloom while is sucking the water up will also get the food coloring up to the petals. I don't think it will work well for a whole rose bush. Helen

I bought one that looks like your pink and green one.... I had him about 3 years. During the year he is sometimes more pink than other times.... he does look pink and green at least once a year. I think it is weather dependent not colored by some other means.... I do know that my grocery store minis seem to get spider mites really easy... I think it is because they are so close to the soil.... not sure.... just my guess.

When you brought your roses home from the grocery store they had been growing inside. First in a very controlled greenhouse environment and then at the store and then in your home. When you took it outdoors (and possibly replanted it in new soil?) you changed it's growing conditions drastically! You don't say where you are but on top of all that we've all been experiencing some odd weather. Weather plays a key role in rose performance. There are lots of reasons a rose will have different colors.

As for their names, that is very hard to say. These grocery minis are bred to be used like florist flowers, enjoy and discard when done blooming. As a result they never come with plant names. Some of the breeders do name them but they don't label the plants so it's very hard to find the names. The other problem is the breeders who do name them use the same name for more than one variety. They may name 3 or 4 different pink roses that they've bred all Sweet Pink or Pink Love or what ever. Doesn't matter to them. All they want is to be able to fill the distributors order. If they need a gross of pink minis they just give them all the pink minis they have no matter the names or varieties. The two biggest growers of these are Kordana and Poulsen. You can check out their websites but it won't be easy to find any matches for your roses.

It's not even summer yet, I really hope they don't get any uglier than what they look now.

Sharon mine have been pretty healthy in the pot. Maybe you should put yours in a pot until it gets taller?

I was wondering if I should bring it inside. I have an east-facing window in my kitchen I could put it on there. I heard roses do not grow well inside? I'm in zone 10 but it has been a bizarre year, it is just starting to warm up.

I wouldn’t bring them inside . They are fine outside ! It’ll be good soon! If you think it’s ugly then it’s ok to pitch it and get something else ! Don’t hang onto something you despise .

NO! Do not bring it inside! Roses hate being indoors. I'm just saying that it's had quite a shock from the greenhouse to the store to your backyard. Give it a chance to get acclimated to it's new surroundings. In zone 10 you may need to put it in a place that gets morning sun only to protect it from your hot afternoon sun. Even in cool weather your sun is very intense. Give it some time to adjust and then slowly move it out into full sun. If the second bloom isn't to your liking then I guess you could ditch it and try again. I kinda like the red brushed edges though!

I think I got this rose last September which means it should have been acclimated by now, I will move it to a less bight area. Lily, I could toss it, I just don't like tossing money/water and all the time I spent on it. However, my real estate is precious, and if I find something better I definitely will give it away. Greenhouse roses are deceiving in my zone, no more grocery store roses for me. I wish I could buy the one I shared a picture of, its so dreamy well if it stayed that way =/

Hi Jemma Wilson! I have bought several grocery store minis, and almost none of them look the same as they did in the store in my garden. One that was lavender bloomed pink in my garden, one that was pure white bloomed yellow with a pink edge, etc. Like others have mentioned it is due to different growing conditions. I find that the blooms from the first year are not too pretty, but in their second year the blooms are really beautiful, and I usually end up liking how they look in my garden better than the store-bought blooms. I will post some pictures of some of my mini roses to show how they look after a few years.

I agree with Damask_rose. I have a very similar rose to the one you show in your last picture. I bought mine as a potted mini at Trader Joe’s several years ago. I happen to despise the color orange, and it bloomed bright, ugly orange the first time it bloomed after I repotted it for outdoors. I like soft pale pink/blush roses, and that’s what color it was upon purchase. It also developed the worst case of powdery mildew I have ever seen in my life, and I see plenty of PM around here each spring and fall. I gave it one treatment of fungicide, and moved the pot to very shady position. It MAY get an hour or two of early AM sun at the most. It never had PM again, and although it’s not gorgeous, it’s far softer and paler than it was in full sun. I‘ve kept it for the same reason you mentioned. The blooms seem to last forever on the bush! I’m sure its very shady position contributes to the blooms lasting longer, but I have other roses in similar positions. Their blooms don’t last nearly as long. It’s also shockingly tolerant of the benign neglect I’ve subjected it to. I didn’t prune mine at all this winter, and it’s about 3F tall, blooming away. I keep telling myself I’ll cut it short once the blooms are gone, but each bloom has lasted for weeks. ‘Mrs. William G Koning’ and ‘Yvonne Rabier’ are in pots nearby, and their blooms have lasted about a week under the same shady conditions. Until I need that pot for something else I’m letting my Trader Joe’s rose stay. It will never be a favorite, but its tenacity has earned it a reprieve from shovel pruning...... for now:). Lisa

Lisa, same here I do not like orange or red roses. I just came back from the grocery store and lol there were some mini roses. I got two =0 I hope this pink one stays pink =)
