Sheila, thank you for this touching tribute. You've far exceeded my efforts in the tea rose department and I couldn't be happier. When I enlarged the pics of Jesse Hildreth I was floored. It is heart-stoppingly beautiful, and I'm sure Jeri would agree. My personal favorites are Edith Perry, which is a stunner, and the beautiful Anna Olivier, whose lovely color is sadly lacking in my garden since the demise of Miss Atwood. May I ask where you bought yours? Monsieur Tillier looks wonderful framed by those columns. All in all, what you've achieved is beyond my ability to express.

Totoro, I retired here for the exact reason you are speaking of. I told my accountant in Alaska I wanted to move to zone 7 to retire. He found that confusing until I spelled out gardening zone 7. I am in Sunset gardening zone 7 here. I found the house on the internet. 5 acres, completely fenced (from deer predation). The home seller said his friends told him the property looked like a penitentiary because it was so barren and had the fence. Score! It's not barren anymore.

Sheila, I love how you chose the location of your new domicile. That is a stroke of genius. Having five fenced acres - talk about a providential and highly unusual find. Your house is beautiful and you've made a garden to match. I'm so glad you chose to grow roses instead of artichokes so that you would end up here.

Sheila, I love these photos--the first and third photos are works of art and should be framed. That sky! And in the first photo, the pinks of the roses are echoed subtly in the sky. Pretty much all my teas were purchased because of you, Ingrid and Marlorena(she had a picture of Mdm Antoine Mari that made my heart stutter)

And now those are the ones that make all the yardwork worth it. The old teas (and the rest of the old garden roses) are so lush and opulent…just can’t get enough!

OMG, Sheila!!! beautiful roses, but it's your landscape photos that really really blow me away. Actually, to me that is what roses really are all about-flower-covered plants forming compositions and harmonies of colour in a landscape. A few favourites: the rainbow one (not roses but irresistable and must be mentioned), Le Vesuve (is that companion nepeta?),the one with the nepeta(?) and Anna Oliver(?),the one with Mme. A. Mari and Mme Lombard,and the sunset.

Sheila how do you water, do you have irrigation, or do you water by hand? Or hose, just curious, thanks!

Alana, here I have drip. We had 41 days of 100 F or higher last Summer. This was double any year in the last 7 years I've been here. If I did not have drip the plants would have been toast. We got 20 inches of rain in the Winter, but none for the Summer months.

Some Californians have also supplemented with a hose. I think my plants would have loved that.

LOL I too chose my location based on gardening...I wanted to be zone 8 so I could grow the widest variety of plants, from stone fruit needing chill to cacti needing heat. And my property has an enormous variety of microclimates from riparian to desert. It has been wonderful but I definitely envy your 5 acres!

FWIW, my teas get water on drip irrigation about once per week for several hours. They're in relatively sandy soil. They aren't on a timer. The drip lines are installed and I go connect a hose and turn it on/off.

My other OGRs (mostly in clay) used to get water about once a week but it's turned out that MIP and MEC need water at least 2x per week. They are my most thirsty roses by far.

Also, to clarify, here in southern Oregon we usually don't get any rain during the summer.

I'm using a Hunter control box that is in the garage to control the automatic irrigation, Alana. I turn the system on in the Spring, maybe April and give each zone one hour of irrigation three times per week. In the Summer heat, it is set to run daily. I turned it off when the Fall rains hit in October or November. I try to have 2 or more 2 gal/hr emitters per rose. The Netafim emitters work best here. There are some irrigation threads on Houzz that are really helpful, I thought too.

I am going to revive this beautiful thread again Sheila! You are my inspiration as Ingrid was yours, and she always had such a impeccable, beautiful garden, Teas, and House, which I remember her sharing. We get some Summer rain, but not as much as we need. And it likes to miss me. We get alot of reliable Winter rain, as you do. My Teas are growing dispite some snow showers we keep getting on the weekends! I pray I get Jessie Hildreth this year! I keep my eye out, so very lovely!

I am so hoping for a great Spring and Summer for us all, Alana. I'm really hoping for more Winter rain this Winter too. We have been a bit skimpy with no January rain.

I miss Ingrid. We have been having the same dry January here too and I keep hoping for more rain. They just put us into phase 3 drought conditions which means only 2 times a week 10 min per station for watering. How does Jesse Hildreth compare to your other white roses in terms of vigor and bloom abundance?

I think Jesse is at the top, Stephanie. During the hottest days of Summer he keeps blooming small flowers that Ingrid described in her Westside Road Cream Tea rose descriptions. The Spring and Fall are spectacular here. In your area he would bloom all Winter I think. Jeri has posted pictures of hers blooming now. In my zone they rest during dead of Winter.

Sounds like a great tea. I will try to get JH next season. Monsieur Tillier also gets small flowers in the summer but he is in the middle of a flush right now at the end of January with 3 inch blooms! I had to do some pruning at 3 yr old to hopefully give a good mature shape going forward, so I think this years flush is smaller than it will be next January, Santa Ana winds not withstanding. I can tell MT won’t need anything, but water and a bit of fertilizer going forward. And I really want a matching white Tea next to him with a similar habit.

Ann, a 65 year old man from my road down here just moved to Delta Junction, Alaska. This is near Fairbanks currently 35 F below zero. I don't think your garden would like it. There are beautiful gardens there, but with a very limited plant palette and a very short season.

Sheila, I'm going to pick your brain, if you don't mind. On the drip irrigation. What will I need? Which drips work well. You need more 1/2 inch then 4th inch, correct? I got some of the gist on how to do it, but not sure of what all I need, what emitters are best, and what all I will need. Did you do your yourself, or did you have someone else install. Any info is deeply appreciated.

Alana, your conditions are likely so different than the arid West I would wonder if drip irrigation is even needed. How big is your garden area and plot? I did have a irrigation specialist install an automatic system controller in the garage, valves in boxes in the ground, then connect it to the 1/2 inch tubing around the garden. Netafim emitters worked the best here. Local advice might really be helpful. All of this was new to me. I had gardened in Minnesota and Alaska and no irrigation was needed.

I found emitters into the main tubing worked better than the 1/4 inch tube ever did. The more connecters, the more places to get clogged.

Ok thanks, I was thinking it would work better that way as well. Directly into the 1/2 inch. We are too hot and dry in the summer. That's the only time its needed. I am just like you, plenty of rain in the Winter , some in Spring hot dry, summer. We will get showers, sometimes, but more than often they miss me. I have alot of land, lol. Maybe just get, alittle at a time. Just keep adding on as I can. Do the hardest places to water first.

It is really great to have the irrigation automatic, Alana. You could plan an area to start it with a professional and get good advice. Maybe with climate change everyone will need irrigation, boo hoo.

I finally got flamingo Gardens Tea on order!!! Yes! Now I just need Jessie Hildreth and a few other select , and I am done!! As long as my babies live and do well, and they generally do great!! So happy!

We have irrigation - mostly drip or soaker hoses where there are a lot of plants together. Our water company put restrictions on water use a while ago, but instead of looking at the water used, they got controlling and decided to dictate HOW you could use water. Their brilliant idea for gardens was that you had to never use your irrigation system, but you could hand water with a hose as much as you wanted. I figure that uses 10+ times more water. Power corrupts.
