Mulch is one of those hotly debated topics. I will only give you my preference. I like Soil Pep. It's very fine bark labeled as a "soil conditioner". Looks great and eventually becomes part of the soil. I don't think it looks too "mulchy". But that's the look I like.

Hmmm I like that look too! Is it something you usually buy in bags or do you have a company that delivers it to you?

Are you concerned about cost? Many municipalities have free wood chips .oops I see you had it. Well, it is cheap.

My favorite is hemlock mulch. It's all natural. It lasts around 2 years, and then just kinda turns into soil.

Popmama, I have seen you mention soil Pep before (couldn’t remember that name though). I have to see if it’s available here.

Slugs tend to find hosta regardless the mulch...even if there’s no mulch. Use what’s available that you like.

BTW what are evergreen tines?

That looks like great stuff popmama. Unfortunately, we don't have anything like it where I am.

We use a rough shredded mulch around the hosta. My fine small chips we keep for the daylilies.

Oh I'm sure they have very small bark "fines" in Canada. You have lots of trees there. Just a matter of figuring out what they are called there and where to buy them.

Popmama, one would think we would have the bark fines, but we really don't. I have searched high and low. Closest I could find is only one place that carries bagged pine bark mulch. The nursery closest to me (and has been around for decades) only carries pine bark nuggets that are way too large. Seems like cedar mulch is more commonly found here and it is often colored. Not sure why that is.
