After a few waterings, it'll get wet. It sounds like you set it atop the seed as a cover, in which case it really only has to hold in the water. Whether it ever gets anything other than damp doesn't really matter.

When getting stuff like that wet does matter, or if you want to initially kick off the seed with a little something extra, you can attach your hose-end sprayer to the hose, and spray the new seed bed with about 2 oz per gallon of any shampoo or liquid dishwashing soap (NOT an antibacterial, though!). Spray enough to thoroughly dampen the entire peat moss profile.

Let sit for an hour or two and then water as normal. That should increase water penetration, although if it goes thoroughly dry again, it may become hydrophobic once again.

Note: if you're seeing a northern lawn now, you may be asking for trouble. Seeding a southern lawn now might be jumping the gun a bit depending on where you are... :-)

It rained all fay today so it should be good. I’ll get some doctor bronners for next time or hydretain. I live in Michigan zone 6. I have to seed now because my front yard is big and I have to do it sections. Did it last year spring, summer, and fall. Got some poa triv spots when I seed in the spring but nothing I cant handle, hopefully

Forget the expensive stuff. Seriously, get the cheapest, crappiest, White Rain shampoo or bargain basement baby shampoo from the bulk aisle. Suave is also good at $0.99 per bottle.

It's not only less expensive, it actually works better. Seriously.

And I say that as a soap maker who won't let anything that didn't pass through my soap pot touch his skin, hair, or clothes (that's how soap snooty I am). I'm giving that judgement with my soil chemist hat on.

The penetration assist will help both getting the peat wet and keeping it wet, and with getting the seed wet and keeping it wet.
