We have several rhodies, some planted by the previous owner and some by us, that were purchased at Home Depot (hangs head in shame). They can't tolerate the cold (at least that's what I think causes this) and the buds form, but turn brown and die off before opening. Some of the one planted by the previous owner are just filler between properties whose main job is screening, which their foliage does nicely, but several that we planted 4 years ago are supposed to be screening and blooming damnit! Is this a general problem with rhodies and big box stores or is buying rhodies in our zone (7a to 7b, it can get down to 5 degrees) a crap shoot, or are their varieties known to be tender that I should avoid? I'm going to dig them out and am looking for replacements. I've had good luck with Flower World. Any other recommendations for specific plants or places to buy?
