Dilemma with front exterior
I’m having trouble with updating the front exterior of my home. I hate the sunbursts over the first floor windows. I’d like to cover them or fill in the area with stucco or give the window a stucco trim. Filling in with the same brick is an option but the newer brick will not look as weathered.
Also, I want to change the front door to a full panel wood walnut double door, not sure if the large transom window March. Any suggestions would be great. I have trouble picturing ideas without really seeing it.

Bringing in a wood door in walnut sounds like a fantastic idea.
As far as your other concerns, maybe just darken the trim. I think a dark charcoal or black.

I am wondering if those windows are original. Do you know? The most cost effective thing to do is to paint the white a neutral color that blends in with the brick. If you can get the same brick, you could do a pattern to fill in.
A full panel walnut door would look so good. I would paint the railing black. Here is a crude mock-up. One side shows bricks in a square running vertically. The other in a dark khaki brown. Window frames painted brown; black would look good , too.
PRO6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoLeave the palladian arches, but find a color you really love to paint them out. Black or forest green would be lovely. Put in window flower boxes on those lower windows to minimize the emphasis of the bottom trim. To me, the biggest positive impact would be to change out your front door. That style with the oval glass feels very out of place and going with a more classic double door would be a huge improvement.

6 years agoThat's beautiful, ourfarmhouse, but a big ticket project. Not really room for shutters on most of these windows. I would paint the window trim and arches black after unifying the trim to one consistent size. Maybe take your suggestion for the front door with side lites for less of an institutional appearance. Looks like there are 7 different urns/pots blocking the steps. I would eliminate all of those and focus more on the garden beds. A good pressure wash of the porch, steps and sidewalk is in order.
6 years agoSince you know you want to change the door you might consider a new entrance. Consider the size of the rough opening if you removed the doors and upper window. If you go with a single door you have room for wide trim and an ordinary transom window. You may need to add brick above the transom but it is not at eye level and will always be shadowed. I would also add a hanging light.
I had thought of darkening the areas around the lower windows. After seeing Houssaon's image I changed my mind. I thought it drew attention to the unusually small upper windows. It is a big house for small windows and that may be why they added the panel and hemisphere on the lowers.
I love the changes made by Ourfarmhouse. My thinking was more inline with Sabrina Alfrin Interiors. Here is my crude image.
I think for safety you should replace the stair railing. It only begins at step three.
