Monogram Welcome Mat - Tacky?

Is a monogram on a welcome mat tacky?

Yes, it’s tacky
No, it’s fine.

The personalization seems like a little more effort compared to a generic mat.

I have never been one to wear an initial pendant on a necklace or have monogram towels, but something about the monogram welcome mat seems to warm up the front stoop.

I like your comments CDR. Thanks.

This is much more classy, in my opinion.

You seems somewhat reluctant about it, though. What about naming the house and the initial on the rug would be the initial of the house? That way, it is about the house and not about you....a little more humble and interesting.

What shall we name your house?

IMO pretentious. Maybe it will depend on the house. Is it a mcmansion then maybe the monogram kind of works. I like how they name homes in England like Blue Bird Cottage for instance. At my home a door mat is usually pretty plain or has a funny logo.

Your idea book has a mix of modern and traditional? What is your style? The doormat is very traditional.

Nailed it, Patricia. Monograms seem pretentious to me, but I want something special for the entry.

CDR, name the house....hmmmm.....interesting...I will have to think on the name...

I like transitional and contemporary but I’m not beholden to one thing....I typically avoid anything that cuts too traditional as I’ve migrated from that style over the years. I don’t dislike it, just have shed a lot of traditional pieces with several house changes where they didn’t work/fit. Not afraid to add an element of it here or there though.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Isn’t McMansion a derogatory term?

It can be but there are many of them around and IMO the people who build them would probably use a monogram door mat , that is what I was getting at. I think you should be able to find a door mat that is nice without the monogram

It’ s a personal choice. If you are asking opinions about it, though, maybe it is not for you. But if you just like the style and don’t care what anyone thinks about it, that is the time to do it.

Personally, I don‘t like the idea of anyone wiping their feet on - or stepping on - my initial. I don‘t like the FengShui of that. I like the look when it is a monogram of a hotel, for example - and you see it on mat upon entry. That is the best place for that I think. But when people use them, friends, etc., I don’t care one way or another. It’s a personal choice.

For all of the reasons stated and your doubts, I would not put the initial doormat there. If you need an additional reason: it is extremely traditional.

Is there anything about your house that is unique? Can we see a photo of it?

I’m in the south, everything gets monogrammed.

I like having my address on the doormat. Gives people one more chance to make sure they are in the right place.

@HALLETT & Co. I have brass numerals on the door so on the mat would be overkill haha

I'm a Southerner too, and have some monogrammed things, but to me putting a monogram outside the house seems pretentious and, yes, tacky. As though you wanted to advertise yourself -- like a hotel!
