Ceiling height ? Island depth? How many pendents?

As Design Interior South indicated, we need much more information. Generally speaking, for a 10' long island and assuming a depth of that countertop 48-54", you would want a 2-3 pendants around 24-30" depending on styling. Other factors come into play as well. Are you putting recessed lights in and how much light will that provide. More photos would help us help you.

Thank you for your answers. The island depth is 49” and the ceiling height is 9ft.

The canned lighting is also being pushed back about 24” because their original location is too close to the island and would be clustered with pendants. There are a total of 8 recessed lights in the ceiling. Lots of lighting from those.

depending on the width of the lights, you could prob fit 3 of them. if they are a large width, two would work.

i believe this is island is 10 feet, if not longer. they did the 3 spaced like this

The width of the ones we liked are 24” wide. Looking at the first pic provided also makes me think I don’t need two canned lights to match up with the other side. Maybe getting rid of two of them in the line of lights going behind pendants might be wise. Thoughts?

just have them operate on diff switches. sometimes you just use the pendants, and sometimes just the cans. mine are like that. I seldom use both at once.

Ya they’re both on different switches right now. I just didn’t know if going with a full line of four installed behind the pendants would be too much. Do kitchen designs normally match the number of can lights on one side with the other or does that become a matter of preference and functionality?

Make your can lights symmetrical looking into the kitchen. Your depth of island looks about 48", because you probably have 24" deep base cabinets facing inside kitchen side and then another facing outside. Leave 8-12" into countertop clearance on ends and the same on sides. So if the countertop will be 48" and you say leave 10" on ends and sides, you have 28" for depth of pendants. I think I would go for 2 large ones so your range hood is focal point, if it is centered?

Just saw your island is 49" deep so my previous numbers are spot on. 28" square/round pendants would be great. Just 2 at that size. Bring size down if you use 3.

Option 1) move cans on left further towards left to be away from pendant area

Option 2) keep on some line and eliminate two cans in middle to keep that area for pendants

Beth, to answer your question the other side is the TV room.

this example is prob the closest I could find to yours. look at the island lights. looks like if you removed those two in the middle it would resemble this.

these others don't have the cans near the pendants. so you could have yours moved farther out away from the island, or remove those two in the middle

It appears you are going to have a decorative hood over your cooktop. Is the island centered on that? I would frame that with two larger pendents.

That’s correct. The pendants as in the pictures provided by the others would make the hood look even nicer when framed by it. 100% going to do that.

Looks like if I move those over it would be wise to put 2 in middle of each side to make a full parameter of lights rather than leaving big gaps of nothing there. That plus the pendants being further away from original location, I think pretty much solves it.

Go big with 2 pendants. As you stated center each on each side of hood as DIS and we have said. Going to be gorgeous. I would definitely do an “open” style because of fairly small overall area and “lines of sight”!
