Looks like someone ate your Royal Wedding leaves. Could that be it?

Have people here had Great Expectations just die on them for no apparent reason?

I've never tried Great Expectations. It's notoriously hard to grow for most people. Apparently, from what I've read here, planting high, living in zone 5 and crossing your fingers will help.

Give your other one some more time. It looks like it may have been eaten to me, too. However, it may just be cold damage. Time will tell.

As Ken already suggested, 'Great Expectations' is a piece of kaka for most who attempt to grow it. Like Ken, I won't try anymore. Your 'Royal Wedding' will probably have the uglies when it fully unfurls but the 2nd growth spurt should be fine.

Here in zone 5a, I believe I have the answer for my gardens. Dream Queen and GE here need some sun. I’ve successfully revived my third Dream Queen ( had purchased three several years ago). My second GE came back better and bigger this spring.

Sherrygirl, my Dream Queen is doing well where she is in light shade with late afternoon sun. Royal Wedding is nearby and does look eaten.... but by what, I don’t know..... no rabbits or other small critters here with yard cats. But my cats from time to time nibble on leaves when they are pipping up a few inches, but never seen them bite a leaf to the ground. Go figure. No deer either....... I am a city gardener. I have plenty of squirrels, but even though they dig around the plants at times, never seen them nibble.

ken, I think I will dig it out and see what it looks like......maybe give it the driveway treatment and pot it up to see if anything happens. Just so happens I have a lovely Lemontini that would look great there! I will try some sun for GE if anything is worth saving.

My smaller one starting to open up. It gets a little less sun than...........

.....my bigger one which gets a little more sun. Zone 6a. It's been a cold wet Spring, but things are going well now even though it will be 36 tonight and was 40 last night.

Not dead but not doing the greatness they said it was to have expectations for. . Has 6 shoots and still looks like crap since 2015. Still opening so maybe this year
