I would definitely get a rug for the seating area, it will define more the space. For what I can see in the picture a 4'-0" X 6'-0" should be perfect and I would try to get one that has the color scheme you are working with, the light blues, turquoise and yellow so it brings the two areas together.

I like the idea of yellow throw pillows. Here are a few. I tend to like the first one.
