Fireplace help!

I love my house but I have always struggled with decorating around this huge fireplace. I DO NOT want to paint it....yet (it's 2 stories tall and would be a HUGE undertaking and RISK).

I'd like some tips on how to soften it a little. We are having the shutters painted white. What color should I paint the fireplace wall to help soften the contract a little? I've looked online and saw that warm colors would work best but, I was hoping to tie in my dining room, which is open to the living room. My dining room is gray.

Remember, shutters will be white and a dark brown mantle will be added to the fireplace. Help! If I can't tone down the fireplace, I will try painting it a gray stone look, if that fails, we will cover it with wood. I'd like to try the easiest first. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
