I don’t recall your original post where you shared your design and material choices, but I wouldn’t be at all shocked to learn that you were (wrongly) criticized for those choices. (I do hope you weren’t, though; there’s just no reason for such behavior.)

Edited to add that I see only one area of concern, and that’s your wine storage: it appears that you’re storing some in the cabinet above the fridge. If so, you should be aware that that is one of the worst places you could possibly have picked to store your wine. The heat (and vibration, believe it or not) of the fridge do not-so-nice things to your wine. Do with this information as you please. ;)

thank you for your kind thoughts. Sammy, yes, that wine space above the fridge is not recommended—our little rack up there is just to fill the space and is ’decorative’. We have a bar and a wine cave elsewhere in the house for actual wine storage. That cab is an example of one of my idiosyncratic design choices.

Very important to design to your lifestyle and choices based on what works for you. I love the ash cabinetry and the glass fronted cabinets make the space so light and airy, and with your stying, will give so much impact and individuality. I love the Ilve range. Love what you did. Love everything, but I find the door between the fridge and hutch takes away from the beauty of these 2 spaces; maybe consider painting that door the same as the wall color so it fades into the background? That way, those 2 areas will really stand out. Overall, great work!!

Yes, Maria, I have struggled a bit with that doorway to the pantry. We painted it the Ben Moore White Dove first and it seemed a little plain, then thought of painting the wall a light taupe and leaving the door white, and that was nixed by my cabinet/kitchen designer (can’t remember why), so then came up with the BM ‘Peruvian Chili‘ color that is on a couple of other doors in the laundry space. I suppose I tried the color because we had a Johnny Grey kitchen some years ago that used a lot of odd colors juxtaposed to light wood cabinets and had a lot going on in the space so I am a little used to a jumbled look.

The other day the idea of having an ash door custom made came to me but haven’t done anything about that—possibly because my cabinet team said that finding enough select ash to match the cabinets would be difficult/costly. As it was, the cabs were delayed because they had some trouble sourcing the ash.

Anyway, the project is evolving and I’m not sure what we’ll end up with, if we ever reach an ‘end’. Right now I am looking for some graphic art or a painting or two instead of the kitchen stuff to put on the shelves by the window but that’s hard to find since we are sequestered still.

Love your kitchen! My favorite kitchens are interesting, unique kitchens like yours. So nice see that you were able to design your kitchen with what you appeals to you rather than the latest trends. That said I understand many people do not have the opportunity to chose what they truly want, also others lack the imagination to see beyond the current “look”. So this kitchen is a real treat, thank you for sharing.

side note : we have a pantry very similar (it looks like anyway from the photo) that I felt like we could get more storage out of. We decided to optimize the space by taking out the door, frame and cutting to the wall and installing Hafela pull out pantry system. We put two side by side. You can use any door you want very easy with it.

Paint the intrusive door the same colour as the walls.

I love the haefele and revashelf organizers—we used them in a number of cabinets—this time we used California Closets for the food pantry. They did a very nice job of making sense out of all our clutter. You can’t see it in the photo but the pantry is T shaped so a little awkward but we manage to fit a lot of stuff in there.

I found the door spice rack on Etsy and that is very handy for the little jars of condiments too. BTW I found the hexagonal spice jars online at ”The Jar Store” and they come in a variety of sizes.

Your kitchen looks great. The only thing I would not have done is give up a wide upper for a single display shelf.

Overall I like it. Pantry Door and surrounding wall - I’d suggest painting it all to match the grey trim color surrounding the cabinets. Your eye immediately goes to that door which is not where you want your eye to go.

Yes, I agree, the (intrusive) door is eye catching, lol—I guess I wanted a kitchen that wasn’t ‘all of a piece’ and that challenged the eye to peel back the layers. I thought my rugs that have a certain amount of orange in them would provide some ‘color echoes’ along with my copper pots and pans. I’m quirky, I know.😉

So much to take in and I love interest! I like the whimsy the door adds inaddition to echoing the copper accents. It is a nice mix of form, function and uniqueness that I do not often see in kitchens these days. Great job!

Yes, felizl, the single shelf is a bit odd—that is one of those situations where I took a left turn at the last minute.

I don’t like uppers hanging near my work space and I don’t need more storage so I thought we would fill the space with shelves, so I ordered three for each side. Then decided two would be enough along with the picture light. Then the tile setter came to set the tile and I admired his artisanal installation and the handmade tiles so I couldn’t bear to cover them up so we installed just one shelf so I could look at the tile.

So now I have four beautiful floating shelves in a pile in the garage. I can always add them or even add uppers if we want that down the line. We had a number of ‘left turns’ as the installation progressed.

What a gift to be able to design your true dream kitchen w/o thought to resale! I have no thoughts on styling your shelves all I know is I always find it curious when people shop for items to display...if I didn't have it I can't see buying for just that purpose. After years in a home with kiddos growing there I am sure you have plenty of mementos to bring back just the right memories.

Arcy, yes, it seems odd to think of buying something just to display it—a little something phony about it, I guess. Probably no different though than collecting art, or tea cups, or whatever.

It’s especially silly for me to buy stuff since I just went on a year long Marie Kondo kick and gave a lot of my stuff away. And I keep telling my daughters that I am going “minimalist” but I can‘t quite do it.

I was at the fabric store the other day and told the salesperson I wanted to be edgy and minimalist, and i wanted a black and white color scheme, and to combine some really modern edgy fabrics for my new deck furniture, yet I kept going over to the flowery boho bright selections. In my defence she did say that they are selling a lot more flowery colored fabric now that covid has kept everyone in their homes. . 🙁

How do you like your La Cournue range? My husband just ordered one without my input. I was floored at the cost. It better be worth it. Delivery is quoted for Jan. 2021, 3 months after our kitchen is scheduled to be finished! Anyone else have a husband that would do that ??!!

The shelf to the left of window seems out of proportion. Can you lengthen it and put a 2nd one above it? You have a beautiful kitchen.

I have to say that mine is a ‘poor man’s’ La Cornue—it is an Italian brand called Ilve, which I had never heard of but I was at the appliance dealer buying a washing machine for a rental house and this range was right in the doorway and was calling my name so I bought it. It was on sale—I didn’t realize that the brand was being discontinued at the time—I just thought it looked neat. It was in storage for a year until I could get plans made for a new kitchen to build around it. I have been cooking on it for a few months but I did have to get in tune with it. everything cooks so much faster than my old Thermador set up. It keeps me on my toes. And it is a little bit of a bother to clean if you are used to streamlined American type brands. Anyway, it is fun, and I’m sure you will love your La Cornue.

On the shelves—I don’t remember why the shelves are sized the way they are, except in the first plan there were three on each side of the sink, then I reduced it to two, and after the tile went in I didn’t want to muck up the beautiful imported chevron tile (Which you can’t really make out in the pics) with more shelves. I could add more if I want because I have them stacked up in the garage, but will wait and see.

I know some folks are really down on kitchen shelves but I will say that I find mine amazingly handy. So easy to reach up and grab a utensil or bowl. I try not to have too much clutter on them, but I say I am much better at that than my friend who has taxidermy displays on her kitchen shelves (not kidding!).

Love it! If it suits you and your family then resale is irrelevant. But I personally don’t see it as a resale problem, the main features are appealing. I’d love to see a pic of just the whole window wall.

I, too, have rugs in my oak-floored kitchen, and I won’t go back to bare floors. They are in front of my work/standing areas and make work more comfortable, plus they bring in color.

Love the upgrades, the floor is amazing, love the natural wood color on the cabinets too.

Felizlady, I have to agree on the rugs. Maybe it is my old legs, but standing on hardwood or tile for any length of time is tiring for me. Years ago I cooked a big long dinner at a friend‘s house and she had granite tile on the floors. Very chic, but Oh, boy, when I got home I had the worst case of Plantar fasciitis and the fierce pain hung on for weeks.

How do you like the ILVE? Any issues with performance / warranty? I'm considering the Majestic II, but afraid to commit.

Ikroop, fyi there is an extensive thread on the Ilve ranges going right now on Houzz with lots of good info on it. I suppose you will have to google Houzz and Ilve to find it. (i don’t know how to link with my I pAd, sorry). I love mine for the looks, and I just cook for my husband and me so it doesn’t get used a lot. I would say if I were cooking for a big family I would probably go for a good cook top and wall ovens that self clean. I have burned myself many times trying to baste or pull things out of the low oven. Never happened with my wall ovens. Check out the other thread before you buy. Good luck!

Michelle, thx, yes, the taj mahal counters IMO make the kitchen. So far easy to keep clean and marble contractor said TM is one of the stronger quartzites.
