Help with master bedroom.

How can I spruce up this space? I am thinking it has too much wood and am thinking of replacing the bed. The furniture placement seems wrong and I want that spa like zen in this room, which it is lacking. I am paralyzed when it comes to shopping for items, so find it very difficult to move forward.

The space is about 24x14.

Do you have to have your office there? Most restful and secure sleep is attained when your bed is opposite the door and there are no electronics in the space. Can you achieve that as a start? Are the double doors a closet or the entry to the room?

Double doors are entry to the room. Office is temporary during COVID (work from home). No TV in the room

could change into a pale blue or quiet sage or any other light and relaxing color, you may start to think of more changes. I like the woods, but you may need some texture, as well: try some fluffy, shaggy rugs, plush colorful velvet cushions, a plant suitable for bedrooms, a couple of bright paintings on the walls....and, definitely get rid of all the clutter on nightstands and floor. Get a nice basket and put all stuff you use in it.

You could use the wooden beds in this photo as inspiration to add color and texture

and definitely put the sofa under the window...it' s too linear this way next to nightstand and bed.

A big rug between the bed and the closet, as well as tugs on each side of the bed would be a big help.

So the bed location is good. I too think the sofa would do well under the window with a floor lamp in the corner left of it. With the armoire between the bath/closet doors, the desk can go in its place with the art above it. Will the lingerie chest fit in the bath? You might try it right of the entry doors if in combo with the armoire it doesn't block the path to the bath.

What about the bed under the window (and add nice window treatments) - maybe the couch at foot of the bed (or on wall where bed is now) / armoire btw bath and closet

I would just switch locations of the sofa and desk, and paint your walls a beautiful color that appeals to you. Color will make the biggest difference in the feel of the room. The bed coordinates with the other furniture, so if you change that you risk everything else looking off. Everything in your room is neutral, so you can choose a soft green, blue, coral, or go more dramatic with a deep color. Look at photos to see what you gravitate toward.

Not a pro, but my biggest "zen" takeaway is that ahhh spacious clean look when you enter the room. Consider this too with your layout. Also: make sure the bed is not directly across from the entry--bad feng shui.

I like decoenthusiast's layout option because you see the bed when you enter, and it seems like you like looking out the window?

Your wood looks rich with the wall color. (Mission furniture has Asian influences.) Everything else should try to stick to a rich tone-on-tone with the wall color. Look at bedding, soft curtain panels, and rug(s) in this color family. You may want 2 rugs, 1 for the bed area and 1 for the desk area.

The window area with the new layout should feel like a meditation corner, with a non-office feel. I would also either slipcover the love seat or get one of those daybeds where you can turn to look out the window. A large print of something in nature would look good over the desk.

Here's some Zen looks that could fit with your furniture. Share with us, though if you already had a look in mind?

Replace the loveseat with a comfy chair and smaller footstool. A large colorful art piece over the “new” chair. Pick up some of the art colors in bedding and accessories, but don’t go pilow crazy. Your throw could be draped across your chair.
My favorite calming bedroom wall color is Sherwin Williams Starry Night, a faint hint of periwinkle.
The Armoire is heavy in it’s current location - would it fit in the wall where the lingerie chest is placed?
I like the desk where you have it now. Beneficial to be able to look outside while working at your computer.

This kind of daybed is what I was referring to in my post, instead of the love seat, in front of the window. Have a great morning and keep us posted! It is going to look beautiful.

What the room needs is some color....unless you want the stark white zen look. I would add a light-colored patterned rug which extends two feet to each side of the bed and another 2-3 feet beyond the foot of the bed so that you have softness under your feet when you get out of bed. You also need some window treatments and more art on the walls.

True Zen...implies more open space...less things..simple bed linens..no conventional cushy furnishings...or cluttered decor....and limited color for instance all white bed linens...but the bed cover could be a rich multi-textured hand woven look ...with big pillows with the same feel...but not lots of little pillows...and throws,etc.....plants that are tall and striking..with simple but sleek profiles add Zen...you can add color with bedside rug runners like kilims or oriental rugs..your chest fits in with the look as it is simple but interesting in style...a similar trunk at the end of the bed..or against the wall can add extra storage for linens or winter clothing...and suitable seating for putting on your shoes ,etc....so the theory is keep it simple but every element can be beautiful and serene at the same time

Lowering the bed would add zen...

Try googling “ define zen design”

Your wooden furniture is lovely and well made (Stickley?), in a craftsman style. As has been suggested, above, moving things around in the room will help. But I suggest you take your cue from the colors, aesthetics of craftsman style. Google the wallpapers of William Morris to see the fabulous colors used that will compliment your wood furniture. Use them to choose wall color (a subtle sage or a soft rusty rose?). An area rug to ground the space in a deep tones. You can use accent colors like goldenrod and even aubergine or coral in the room. Consider larger art that evokes that period. Even a framed cut of Morris wallpaper! Draperies framing your window will soften the room, too. Good luck with a wonderful space!

    Hi, Pam,
Once you get the furniture layout rearranged the way you want it, please post room photos. Then we can work
    on decor.

Would you please describe for us how your personal interpretation of zen feels and looks to you? I suggest you start with the bed. As that is the biggest furniture piece, it will make the most impact. What kind of headboard is in your vision? How high is the bed frame? IF there is a dust ruffle what style is it? What color are the bed sheets? Are they silky or cottony? What kind of covering is on the bed? How many pillows? It will be very helpful if you add photos of your zen BR vision to your Master Bedroom idea book.

I really appreciate these comments. I may have mis-used the word zen, what i mean is quiet and calm. i am going to move the furniture as suggested and will check out the colour and William Morris wallpaper suggestions, and purchase a rug.

I am thinking of a bench at the end of the bed. I like the look of crisp white linens and have a white coverlet with the duvet folded at the end of the bed. Looking to change the duvet.

Thanks for the assistance, this feels within my reach now.

Definitely look at “quite, calm” paint colors. One gallon will change that room in a single day. Lots of good suggestions for furniture placement. Before ditching the bed, consider spending your money on superb, beautiful linens and some cushy rugs. (Overstock has great, inexpensive ones. ). Let us know your favorite colors and then folks can scour websites for ideas.

Thanks for getting back to us, Pam! Are there some pictures or ideabooks on Houzz that you like? You did not misuse Zen at all. In modern use the term can describe a feeling. Many decorating styles can also have a Zen feel.

For "quiet and calm" try something like these for a wall color

Would love to see it finished. I also think it would be good to keep the furniture. Once you make changes to colour and add textiles, curtains, lamps etc etc and rugs it will look very different.

Since all your hard wood pieces are square .. sharp edged ...i would go with big puffy bedding..soft and simple..a duvet with a fluffy down comforter inside and two big puffy pillows that are firmer to use for propping up to read .etc....no throws to flatten the comforter or extra pillows to “arrange” ..your sleeping pillows also simple to layer under or in front of the big pillows...rugs that have some fluff also add to the “relax” vibe of the room..many times you will get matching pocket type pillow covers with your duvet..these make excellent sleeping pillow covers as they look like a decorative pillow too..if you are going all white select all the white parts from the sheets upward ....of contrasting weaves and textures rather than all just flat white sheet materials

Agree with trying to switch around the furniture: large armoire between closet and bathroom, chair/ottoman under window (or angled in corner with lamp), desk next to bed and doubles as nightstand. I like our neutral bedding, but if you want to cozy it up, switch up to variety of textures of white. When you do choose a soft paint color, make sure to paint the vents and maybe even get matching outlet covers so everything on the wall disappears. Have you considered floor length linen drapes?
