IMO the shutters have no place to go. You have quoins all along the corners and I don't see shutters and quoins working together at all in the style of home you show. JMO

What would work to up the style is a change in landscaping. Check out the landscape forum here on houzz for ideas and a plan. You have a lovely home. It just needs different landscaping to enhance it a bit.

I would be making the door color pop, adding some color to your landscape, enlarging the porch lights, and changing the trim color.

I think a door painted neutral or a new black door with glass as below looks elegant and inviting. What does the exterior lighting look like up close? Possibly upgrade, however nice home and congratulation.

Oh yes, that lighting needs an upgrade! let me start with it should be larger and down-facing! I am very much leaning toward a larger flush mount fixture for the hanging light, as it is underscored now but cannot hang much larger, it's not doing much for the entry as is now, a larger scaled flush mount would help.

As far as economical updates how do you feel about shutters on the 2nd floor windows or contrasting keystones?

I would agree that they will really not help. I think addressing things that are closer to eye level and draw you into the house are more important.

Upload a picture of your house into the SW website and paint your keystones. See if you like the contrast. My keystone was taupe while my bricks were red and I liked the contrast it provided. You can stain the keystones with brick stain to avoid them being too opaque.

Italian Cypress trees would look great on either side of the entrance if there is room!

No shutters. I like the window box / faux balcony ideas. Paint the door and the quoins first, then see if it's enough. Add color with landscaping and containers. Bigger lights that make a statement.

Well you could do either really. In a small space in pots or in the ground you could get taller trees. They are very stately and would look great with your style of house. Actually you could do all four... two in pots under the lights and two larger trees planted in the ground on both sides against ( close to) the house .

I would work on the stairs and railings look to thin and flimsy. Broader black curving railings or adding some stone or brick on the stairs then some surrounding landscape with maybe some spreading roses would be nice. The door looks fabulous in dark gray or black! Great house but needs color and landscape maybe some vines to add a bit of depth.
