I would go with the 4 ft aisle. I think the end of the island aligning with the fridge is sufficient.

Take it off the DW end--since there is less than 3 1/2' between the range and island, that will give you some step-back room on the right side of the range, and will give you more space for someone to slide by the open DW door.

Align with the fridge, then make it long enough to get to the aisle width you want in front of the DW. (Doesn't have to be either 7' or 8', right? Cabinets typically go in increments of 3", or if you're doing custom they can be whatever width you want.) If you want a 4' aisle then 7' island aligned with fridge makes sense. Remember to factor in counter overhangs when planning your aisle - measure counter to counter not cabinet to cabinet.

What's the aisle width between your fridge handles and island counter? Check your fridge specs for clearances and make sure you're happy with how much space you'll have to stand in front and open the doors. Only mentioning because mine is workable but a bit tight if two people are there.

Thank you for all the great advice! I think the 4 feet between the dishwasher and the island will be better than other options. Good suggestion to check on fridge doors. It’s what you don’t even know to worry about that is most worrisome!
