Do you have any more close-up images of it? I'd like to be able to see the beard more closely to see if it has a horn. From this angle it sort of looks like it does, but kinda hard to conclude.

The flower is starting to fade and there are no others yet. If this does not help, I can wait for a fresh flower.

There are a lot of purple "self" iris so it may be very difficult to identify with any amount of certainty. But if there are horns on the beard, that would mean it's a "space age" iris and there are probably fewer of those that are self purple. Sure, try to get a better picture of the beard and throat when you get another bloom. Also, take note of fragrance.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a purple "self" iris? And what are "horns on the beard?" An internet search did not readily produce an answer. I have 2 types of purple iris in my own garden and I've never tried to ID them, but now you have me curious about these horns and self. Here are some pics of mine (I'm not the original author,) as well as another that is yellow with burgundy falls. I'm not looking for ID, I'm just wondering what these "horns" and "self" are and if my irises have them?

A 'self' is an iris of a single color.

A 'horn' is a petal extrusion below the beard that curves up and away to form a 'horn-like' structure.

NYDepot, your pictures this year do have more details. But I probably won't be able to identify your iris. There are just too many similar to that one to say. My apologies! If you want to try searching through the iris database, I would describe yours as a lavender self (meaning the standards and falls are the same color) with an orange fading to white beard.

A, yours are a little more distinct. If you remember where you bought them, it would help narrow down.
