Streaming TV series suggestions

I'm looking for series that aren't stressful. I get enough of that from the news these days. I enjoy British mysteries where everything is wrapped up neatly each episode, such as Miss Marple and Poirot. I've recently finished watching the latest (last?) season of Doc Martin, and surprisingly really enjoyed Uploadon Amazon Prime. The services that I currently have are Amazon Prime, Acorn TV and Netflix. I'm not opposed to paying for another service if there is a really good series to watch.

In addition to Upload, I can also recommend Dead Still on Acorn. Quirky series set in Victorian Dublin, centers around a photographer who specializes in photos of the deceased (which was really a thing in Victorian times). There is also a murder mystery woven in.

I'm a huge fan of Schitts Creek. You have to get through the first couple of episodes before it really takes off and grabs you, but then!!! So funny.

A nice, light, dysfunctional family series is the Australian series “Offspring”.

I binged Defending Jacob on Netflix last week. I also binged Dead to Me Season 2. (terriks) I think you have a sense of humor like I so you might like Dead to Me: :-).

We just started watching Quiz on AMC, which is good, but comes out weekly. It’s about Who wants to be a Millionaire, which originated in England, and a cheating scandal that occured. Stars Matthew MacFayden, the dreamy Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. And of Succession, which is superb if you haven’t seen it yet. Homecoming on Prime or Netflix is very good, but a bit heavy. We are also trying to watch Space Force on Netflix, which has a fabulous cast, but it isn’t so great so far.

We just binged watched several seasons of Fauda on Netflix. It’s Not light but it is really good. Most is in English but there are a few subtitles here and there. We are looking forward to the last season sometime into the future. There is something very yummy about Lior Raz and he has a very interesting bio.

    It‘s that “look”!

I’ve been making my way through Arrested Development, which I had never watched before. It’s very funny.

The Amazing Race is quite entertaining! We’ve been watching as a family.

I don't know if it will be up your alley, as it is very different from the content you listed, but Sex Education on Netflix is great. It manages to be sweet, raunchy, and educational, all in one entertaining package.

A friend of mine highly recommended Derry Girls (also Netflix), about girls attending Catholic school in Ireland in the 80s (my friend is Irish and came of age in the 80s, and said it represented her youth pretty well). The episodes I saw seemed good but not my cup of tea, so I haven't actually finished.

Well, if you want to be in the know with the teens/early 20’s...watch Outer Banks! My 17 year old got me into it...it’s very suspenseful but not in a bad way. Beware...it will make you want to go to the beach, big time! Also...for those of us who are very familiar with the area...it looks “off.” It is supposed to be Figure 8, but the town scenes are heavily wooded with drippy Spanish moss. I watch several episodes before I realized that it all looked very familiar...it was filmed in the Charleston area! Like John’s Island, which looks nothing like the OBX! 😂 But prettier, to me, so win! Also, the lead is gorgeous and is 27 in real life so it’s ok to call him gorgeous (he plays 16 on the show.) Mindless fun during the quarantine.

Agree about Schitt’s Creek, give it at least 5 episodes...I promise it gets sooooo good! You will fall in love with this family!

Another vote for Schitt’s Creek. I love David! And Dead to Me is also great.

    Great on Hulu is good.

Midsomer Murder on Acorn set in England, and Murdoch Mysteries set in Toronto Canada, late 1890s early 1900s. Acorn also

We are a little late since it just finished up in real time, but The Last Dance on ESPN about the last days of the Chicago Bulls in their 90's heyday. It is 10 episodes. You can watch it even if you are not a huge sports fan.

The Americans was excellent! Also recommend that.

I loved Doc Martin and Call The Midwife.

I recently enjoyed Last Tango in Halifax. It was very good.

I don’t usually like crime dramas because I can’t stand violence.

However, Unforgotten was very well done. I recommend it. They kept the gory stuff to a minimum.

I’ve given up on trying to read these days. Too stressed to concentrate. I find my mind wanders.

“ I’ve given up on trying to read these days. Too stressed to concentrate. I find my mind wanders.”

    ^^ Me too.

I enjoyed "Love," about a young couple in Los Angeles. And "Dead to Me" with Cristina Applegate. Both are on Netflix, I believe.

    ^^^ Me three

Thanks for all the suggestions. I posted last night, but didn't see my post on the forum until this afternoon. Houzz gremlins I guess!

graywings - I have watched Love, I think that I mostly enjoy it because so much of it looks like it is filmed in the neighborhood where my daughter lives, and she and I have gone to several of the restaurants that have been in the show.

I think that I definitely need to put Dead to Me on my watch list. It sounds like it's right up my alley.

I don't like lots of violence, especially right now, that's why the more genteel murder mysteries like Midsomer Murders and anything by Agatha Christie appeal to me. I'll check out Murdoch Mysteries. I might have to give Schitt's Creek another try. I think that I only watched the first episode.

Also loved The Americans, Dead to Me, Fauda and Arrested Development. We just finished Unorthodox, a modern day tale of what it’s like to be a woman living in a Hasidic cult In Brooklyn, only 4 episodes, but well written and acted, highly recommend.

If you’re looking for an easy going crime drama series, Justified and Longmire, I liked Justified better, but we have family in Wyoming, so Longmire was must see TV for us so we could chat with the in-laws about it. And if you like Timothy Olyphant (star of Justified), Santa Clarita Diet is hysterical, if a tad gory, but in a fun way (really).

I was enjoying The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon, until we had a lousy internet connection and it didn't work. I need to revisit, I thought it was really cute.

I agree, Mrs. Maisel on Amazon is another one if you haven't already watched it.

We've tried to watch Schitt's Creek a few times and just can't get into it. Same with Space Force. But then, we stuck through the first episodes of Killing Eve before getting hooked. Dead to Me is good!

We’ve been watching Peak Practice (British medical show) and House (not British medical show) and like both of them. We also really liked Scott and Bailey and Foyle’s War - both British. Consider this recommendation is coming from someone who didn't care at all for Schitt’s Creek or Mrs Maisel but really liked Doc Martin. We watched The Americans too - entertaining but a bit gruesome. I can only watch so much of that.

If you ever come across the 1984 British "House of Cards" miniseries, watch it! It's much like the American remake but ends sooner, and perfectly. We got it by accident from the library when looking for the American one, and loved it.

Oh, I forgot about Fleabag, which is wonderful! Also Casual, which is on Hulu, and Catastrophe, a great British series. Lovesick, is a clever British series as well. If you have Apple TV, The Morning Show is great.

We loved 800 Words on Acorn! Takes place in New Zealand! Also like Father Brown, Grantchester, My Life is Murder. Also watch Vera.

Oh, yes, Fleabag, THAT’S the one where someone here said to give it 2-3 episodes, the first episode we didn’t like but after the second we loved it.

You could try Rosemary and Thyme. Nice cozy British mystery series with lots of gardens. I think it’s currently available on amazon prime. Also the Durrells in Corfu.

Acorn: Good Karma Hospital (hospital show in India)

Netflix: Afterlife (2 seasons) Ricky Gervais dark comedy. His character’s wife has died a difficult time moving on. You will laugh and cry in the episode.

I loved Doc Martin, but lost it. I think it was on Netflix. We only have Amazon prime now, is it available anywhere else?

I did not like Fleabag at all.

    Catastrophe is hilarious!

I love The Americans, but it is definitely not on the lighter side.

Dead to Me is cute and entertaining.

Justified is one of my favorites... great characters, acting and script.

One of my all time favorites is The Good WIfe. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it!!

I couldn’t get into Marvelous Mrs Maisel. I love the period, so seeing the sets, cars and clothing kept me watching for several episodes, but I couldn’t continue. I also tried but quit Longmire.

Fleabag is one of my favorite ever series. I found it brilliant.

    Others I have enjoyed are:

    The Darling Buds of May

    Frankie Drake Mysteries

    Outnumbered

    Mum

"What we do in the Shadows" is so, so funny. There is a movie, which came first, and they are currently in season two.

I can't recommend too much else because I like dark, quirky, and gritty stuff best.

"Fleabag" is awesome but super raunchy so be forewarned.

"Insecure" is also good. I could watch it just to see Issa Rae's beautiful hairstyles!

ETA: I tried to watch Space Force but it's a total dud. I couldn't get through the first episode.

Yes! We too love "What We Do In The Shadows!" (Enjoyed the movie too.) It's equal parts ridiculousness and cleverness, and we always laugh often which watching. The character of Colin Robinson is an energy feeding vampire, who so beautifully represents every milquetoast boor you've ever known. I think I have a bit of a crush on Nandor too. 😁

    Nandor (L) and Colin (R)

Ooooh, just saw this pic of the actor who plays Nandor. Yes, definitely have a crush.

Love these discussions, since I finally have time to dig into some of the new golden age of television--and there sure are some gems out there!

I loved The Americans and Schitts Creek. It definitely took me a few episodes of SC before I started enjoying it but then what a lovely series. Started Killing Eve a few weeks ago but haven't gone past the first few episodes.

I just found a really funny, quirky little gem and am loving Amy Schumer Learns to Cook. It's on the Food Network (d'oh) and the title is completely descriptive. She and her husband Chris Fischer, a professional chef, did a series of shows from a rural cabin where they quarantined in which he basically shows her cooking techniques while they whip up themed meals.

It's filmed in part by their nanny Jane with a hand held camera, the names of the dishes they are making are hand printed on cardboard LOL, and the byplay between Amy and her husband is hilarious. I read somewhere he's on the spectrum and that lends itself to some of the warmth of the show. She will say something Amy Schumer-ish and he either ignores it, laughs or sometimes deadpans a literal response to an outrageous comment. She always starts by making a cocktail, then they cook together. Occasionally their baby Gene appears, and I highly recommend this one for happy escapist watching.

Lite fare on Netflix that I recommend would be Heartland. There's 11 seasons out, I believe, but they are still filming.

A movie that I thought was good is The Healer. Also on Netflix.

If you've never seen the West Wing, I highly recommend it.

DH and I loved Mr. and Mrs. Murder, an Australian comedy murder mystery show. The characters are crime scene cleaners and the husband is a brilliant clever guy and the wife is a great character. The stories are completed in each episode so it’s easy to watch one at a time. There are only 13 episodes. It is on Acorn.

We're watching Normal People on Hulu and really enjoying it. Rarely do we agree on the same program but this has us both watching. We've got 3 episodes left and will finish tonight. Each episode is only 25 minutes so very easy to binge. .

Britbox: I've been watching Death in Paradise and Father Brown. I loved Vera and am waiting for the next season. There are old favorites - Agatha Christie movies, Acorn has Midsomer Murders, a quirky New Zealand police show Brokenwood Mysteries, and Agatha Raisin which is interesting plus adding new shows all the time.

isitdoneyet, thanks for the Normal People recommendation (I think)...I spent too much time this afternoon binge watching. She is SUCH an amazing actress (he's good, too). They spend a little too much time in bed in a few episodes - the love scenes are very good, but a little tiresome after so many of them, lol.

    Forgot about 'Mom'. Loved it!!!

For me, the absolute champion, never-to-be-surpassed series is Game of Thrones. Great acting, great writing, intriguing plots, and beautiful locations. True, it is very violent, so I - hating "blood 'n guts" - spent a fair amount of time peeking between my fingers with squinted eyes. That said, it is epic, a story of human foibles and weaknesses and occasional courage. If you can cope with limbs being lopped off, of everything that could go wrong being shown on screen, and if you can follow the convoluted plot and myriad characters - I recommend it. imo there's nothing else like it. The dragons!

DH and I also loved Mad Men. We came to it toward the end of its run, so there was a lot of binge-watching to catch up. It would have been my favorite but for GOT. We've watched many of the above-mentioned shows, especially enjoying Foyle's War.

Oly and Isitdone, I absolutely loved Normal People! I have recommended it to everyone I know. It is so real and raw. I loved the two main actors.

I did not recommend it before as I did not see it as a lite series but it is a remarkable one!

I hope many people take a little time and watch it.

A few recent ones I liked Are:

    Reckoning

    Defending Jacob

The Kominsky Method (fits the light-hearted method)

    Unorthodox

Of course we all have our all-time faves and I’ve given mine on similar threads:

    The Wire

    Sopranos,

    Breaking bad

    Rectify

I’ll add The WestWing to that list.

Some shows I’ve enjoyed but wouldn’t call my forever favorites are

    Six Feet Under

Mad Men (not the last couple of seasons)

    Gilmore Girls

Dexter (not the last couple of seasons)

    Fargo

    The Good Wife

Although we LOVED The Good Wife, and the first couple of seasons of The Good Fight spin-off

on CBS all Access, the last two seasons have been weird and disappointing.

Darn, Defending Jacob seems to be gone from Netflix. Scrolling through, we haven’t found anything new to June that we both want to watch.

The new season of Queer Eye just dropped today. Love it!

Defending Jacob is on Apple TV.

I just finished watching Unorthodox. So good! I even watched the “making of “ episode.

One of my all time favorite binge watches was Six Feet Under. Also, Mad Men, after resisting for a long time.

Dexter and The Good Wife are on my to-do list! I have to admit that I love watching stuff by myself on my iPad, headphones on. It’s like the ultimate escape these days. (You know, since actual escape isn’t possible.)

When Calls the Heart was a very good show. I confess, we have been watching the trials and tribulations of the Ewings on Dallas.
