Don't prune anything now! That little tree needs every single one of those leaves to help get it established and to counteract potential transplant shock. All it needs now is the proper watering.

If on dwarfing rootstock, the tree is never going to get very big....12-18'. Structural pruning is done during the dormant period and once established, maintenance pruning can be done in summer. But generally cherries, and especially dwarf cherries, do not require the same sort of pruning attention of most other fruit trees.

And before you do any structural pruning....and I'm not sure you need to......take advantage of any fruit tree pruning classes offered by local nurseries or garden centers. These are often free and held in late winter. And are well worth the effort to seek out. You will learn far more form one of these classes than anything you can read online or from a book or watch on YouTube.

cherry trees are notorious for poor branching. you could put some spreader sticks in to increase the general angle of the branches. I would not expect to get any more branches coming in below the existing ones IMHE.

It has those 3 branches all coming from almost the same point on the trunk because - as is often done, unfortunately - the grower topped it to make it a branched specimen at time of sale. With doubtless them having only 2 years put into production of this example. Such very quick development of finished nursery stock is aimed for because the more often the operation can put out a crop the more money is made off of the land being used.

Thank you for the responses so far! I bought branch spreaders, and once the crown is more opened up I will just leave the tree alone for this year, let it focus growing roots
