If there's anything I've learned it's that there is a yin and yang to nature, and to my garden, and that a garden that to me seems devastated by various forces will in time rebound, and that equally so a garden that is lush and beautiful will at some time be much less so. That may not be so evident in less harsh conditions (although nowadays it is true in more places than before) but it's the case now for me, and I've learned to have a much more Zen attitude about the whole process. One thing that hasn't changed is the loving support I've received from all of you here, and that is precious beyond words.

Marlorena, for me Charles Darwin has not been a very vigorous rose (and this is the second one I've had) but it may be completely different in your conditions, especially as all your plants seem to thrive hugely. What I like about it is the color, which is a soft old gold that I haven't seen in any other rose. However, as the bloom ages it changes to an almost beige color that not everyone finds attractive. I'd love to see yours and have your opinion of it.

Is the fencing around Charles Darwin new this year, or was there destructive chewing despite it the prior two years?

As an aside, I’ve heard the new fencing in the news, which was erected yesterday (Pennsylvania Ave. NW), is being called Babygate.

Wonderful pictures, Ingrid. Your garden looks lush and wild! Potter and Moore has such an appealing shape -- lots of rounded edges, very full. It looks incredibly fragrant -- is it? I hope so!

Main Street Garden, I have quite the assortment, rabbits, ground squirrels and roof rats, and I'm not sure which of them causes the most damage. rifis, I can't be sure about the fencing of this particular rose, but with others they actually lift up the fencing and go under, so nothing has really worked. On roses that had only the plastic fencing they've managed to remove the whole thing and it will be lying on the ground next to the rose. Talk about an act of defiance! K S, I'm sorry to say that Potter and Moore is not fragrant, and that no doubt is the reason it's been discontinued. I don't require that all of my roses be fragrant, and some in fact will be too much for me when I bring them inside, but I imagine fragrance is a big plus for many if not most people.

Yes, I pruned it a bit over the winter and that might have helped somewhat.
