Bark mulch, not too thick. Nourishes plants unlike the mulch made from pallets that robs nutrients from the soil.

The bark mulch I can get now is much bigger than larger than what I was using.

you dont have to use the same mulch in every bed ... though within one bed... it does look better ...

I use a hemlock mulch, it's a natural product. Really good for the soil.

I like the idea of Hemlock mulch and it looks great. Haven't seen it available here. I've been using Cypress mulch. In fact, I'm taking a break from slinging it right now.

I use cypress mulch on the beds, it lasts longer than most other wood products, does not mat, and doesn't mold when there is an extended period of rain. I use cedar mulch, the largest size pieces I can find, on the pathways. Cedar mulch lasts for a number of years, does not mold or mat, but it has some growth retardant properties that make it less ideal for the hosta beds. Cedar mulch also helps with flea control, and the local rabbits always vacate the area when I put down a new layer, apparently they don't care for the smell or taste.

Any wood mulch on top of the soil will not rob nutrients. It’s only when dug into the soil that it ties up nitrogen for a spell.
