Was it clumpy or rhizomatous?

Could this be some type of fescue?

Hard to say for sure without flowers. Maybe something like Nassella pulchra, needlegrass? You really need flowers for all graminoids.

It looks like it could be a grass called Red Fescue (Festuca rubra)?

But apparently, there is a native Red Fescue, and also a non-native Creeping Red Fescue...although both are considered the same species (Festuca rubra)? However, I'm not exactly sure what the difference is?

I planted fine fescue this year and it looks like that, however it was not recommended for southern tier states where warm season lawns are common, so you might have something else. Mine is a combo of hard fescue, Chewing fescue, and creeping red fescue.

Festuca rubra has different subspecies, some are rhizomatous and sod forming, others are bunching type. Just depends on where the grass is from and the conditions it adapted to, and then how it was subsequently bred for lawn or horticulture use.

I learned like 20 y ago when I worked for a short spell at some university, that in lawn seed mixtures there are sub species of Festuca rubra used

F rubra sp. rubra

and F rubra commutata.

Looking back now I do not know though how accurate those terms are re the botanic details or whether they are rather trade names

FYI, here's what it looked like on 2021/12/28 - mostly yellowed with a little green left in a few patches still...

So, I'm guessing due to its long growing season, it's a cool season grass (or fescue, or whatever)?

And it appeared clumpy with fibrous roots...
