I have never seen a bearded iris set pods! The northern blue flag I planted at moms reseeds a bit and the Siberian iris sets pods (but I don’t think they are viable seeds) but the bearded ones always just kind of shrivel up and disappear. Cool!

I'm really fascinated by pods! I may try to dry this one and save it just because it's so cool. Like you Zach, I have seen my sibs set pods many times but never a bearded. Plants are always surprising me!

I’ve never seen my iris set pods since I chop them down too soon. I will be on the lookout for the later blooming ones and see if they produce any pods. My neighbor has white Siberians so I’ll watch for those pods forming.

Popmama - after clearing out an area we rarely use or see, I found 2 bearded iris seed pods. I think the iris is a 2 tone purple. Should I just let them dry without cutting? I’m assuming that would be best.

Beats me, tomatoz1! I cut mine off and it's upside-down drying still. I was just fascinated by the pod! But I never had any intentions of doing anything with it. However, I believe your instincts are correct to leave it until it dries and starts to open on its own. That's the way other pods work. I did find another one as well on a totally different bearded iris. I guess it's the year of the pods! My baptisia has hundreds of them this year.

Hubby did a bit of research on bearded iris pods. They should be left on the stalk to dry and will ‘spring’ open to release the seeds. They suggested the seeds may not be close to the mother plant and should be planted in the Fall. We’ll see if I can save a few and plant them.

mmm12, I think it's the year of the pods! My baptisia has hundreds of pods on it this year. It's a pod phenomenon.

I picked lots of seed pods from Tulips this year. also the pink and white poppies. I've gotta get some research done on tulip seeds. Should be interesting.
