They’d be fine in that light. Where are you located and how much room do you have? Other suggestions may come with that info.

I'm in CT Zone 6a. I'm sadly trying to start the replacement of some inevitably declining medium and large hemlocks that were half dead (or more) already when I moved in a year ago and I can't afford to have a tree service treat annually - especially given their already poor condition. If the replacement does OK after a few years, I'll have the hemlocks taken down before they completely die (they are severely infected currently)

This is the western border of my property (and neighbors house), so the morning sun hits them until it gets overhead around noon, then it's shade under tall limbed up oaks. Those are baby Fargesia Muraliea and Nitida Bamboo in the foreground I will move to accommodate.

I definitely have space for a 100'x30' tree, planting at the edge of the grass, then removing the old hemlocks as the replacement gains size. Plus I'm already 50' and am Ok if it's my heirs problem when they are too big 50 years from now lol.

They do have fair shade tolerance. But less light, less growth.

In my experience, Norway Spruce grow just about anywhere I plant them (northern nj zone 6B at 1k ft elevatioin). I've put them in open sunny dry areas, in shaded decidous forest and in shaded evergreen areas. They always survive and rarely get browsed by deer. All the shade seems to do is slow down the first year or two of growth. But even in shade, after they establish good roots, they start growing at 1ft plus per year. Incredibly adaptable trees, perfect for our area.

Mine DO get browsed by deer. Protect them when they're young and tender!

In nature they start their growth in the shade of the larger trees, They would grow in the shade until one of the surrounding trees dies or they height becomes greater that those tree that surrounds it.
