Would not paint the brick but you could use a stain to change the color of the brick but not the grout -- keeping the brick wall look for the brick wall.

Criminals can enter any home -- it's just easier to get into some than others. If you're targeted, they'll just go to your front door or, more likely, your back door. Criminals usually prefer not to be see committing crimes. If your door is visible from the curb so would any break in on that side be visible to anyone passing by.

Building codes, including set back rules permitting, you could add a a deck and railing or even a screened porch or just a 4'x4' stoop, step and patio.

There are some practical measures you can take, including lights alarms and/or camera ( real or fake). Solar lights wouldn't require wiring and some have motion sensors.

You could add a security door. Some are more attractive than others.
