By the way, what happened with the feral garlic that you were growing from bulbils years ago? Have you kept it going?

I still have it, but it never has really sized up. I keep it for sentimental value if nothing else. Good for garlic powder though and the smaller ones keep pretty well.. Nice big bulbils from that one that go right from first year to small bulbs. I never did get any rounds form them..

IIRC Turbins are supposed to be the earliest garlic to harvest but do better in the south. I guess that doesn't include south Minneapolis. lol

I dug up my German White and Music last weekend. Got a decent harvest but no bulbs over 2.25". Spanish Roja and Chesnok red are still going and I have left a few scapes on the SR to harvest bulbils,

Question - can I cut the scapes before I dig the bulbs and put them in water to mature?

IIRC I read that some do cut the scapes and put them in water when they try to get true seed. They have to pick out the bulbils to get the true flowers. I do not see why you wouldn't get decent bulbils by leaving them on the cut scapes. I suspect you would have to let the scapes straighten out and swell some though.

I gotta wonder if using Turbans like Maiskij would not be a way to grow the single clove large rounds that were all the rage a while back. That looks like what a lot of my Maiskij turned out to be. I got some true bulbs but with very small cloves as well, but mostly singles. I think I will try one more time and maybe space them a little closer, using the bulbs rather than the rounds to see if the little cloves are what make the singles. If I can dependably produce those large singles, that would be nice.

South Minneapolis definitely south of much of Minnesota. Also a heat island so warmer than most of the surrounding suburbs. And getting warmer. I have hardy plants now that were not hardy 20 years ago.
