Kitchen Lighting

last modified: 6 years ago

Our remodeled kitchen needs lights. One near the sink, one over the island and one over the dining table. I don't like pendants or chandeliers because they hang low and will obstruct the view of the lake from the sliding doors. I am thinking of semi flush lights. We have some recessed lights and under-cabinet lights already installed. Total floor area is 12 x 24 and 8 inch ceiling. Thoughts?

PS: The table cloth and the paint cans are already gone, so don't let it get to you ;-)

Well if you don't want pendants , which BTW would have no effect on the view , then I guess the semi flush would work. BTW the table cloth needs to go and not be on the table unless you are eating .

Thanks Patricia, would you recommend pendants over the island?

What about the dining table? Pendant there as well?

BTW the table cloth is gone :)

Thanks Beth, I am planning to remove the valance.

What would you suggest I do with the deck fence? The deck is in need of repair so I should be able to make changes.

I don't mind the deck fence. you mentioned the view, so if you really want an unobstructed view, perhaps look at doing cables or even glass.

and as long as I'm spending your money, look into doing larger sliding doors. if you did the entire wall with doors or doors/windows, you could have whatever lights you wanted because you'd have entire wall w/a view!

maybe even see about doing a a fixed window between the two sliders.

or, just do a larger slider. you have the room

You should try clear pendants. They really will not block your view!

I think pendants are like the accent in a kitchen and also are very good for lighting the island if you remember to get fixtures that light down not up. Then look for a chandelier to work with those pendants for over the table and that same direction for the the light . I have never understood lighting that lights the ceiling over a table. I would also suggest art on that back wall in the DR and a buffet .

Clear glass pendants will not give you any light, which is fine if you dont need it to dine by or work by on the island, they can be glary if you don't use an Edison bulb.

I would do something that rings to the lake like a maybe warehouse shade. Over the dining, I would put a thin armed chandelier or a larger warehouse shade.. Semi-flush will just have people looking up wondering why you didnt hang something.

You could do a semi-flush mount, one over the island, one over the table:

    Or something more traditional:

    Hope this helps!

    Hello, I'm back.

Here's what we are thinking of getting.

For the Island: ET2 Clear Cylinder 5 1/2"W Frosted Glass Pendant Light

and for thedining table: Possini Euro Wired 32" Wide Glass and Chrome Chandelier

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts regarding the choices. Thanks!

I used the old picture to add the lights and here it is.

Those Pendant lights are too small, and not quite right, your house is semi-traditional, unless you are getting a new table, it seems a bit off to me. also, you want to hang them much lower than that. Now seeing kinda what you like we can help more!1

The second choice for the dining table is

Crystorama Brielle 18"W Antique Silver 4-Light Chandelier

@RL Relocation LLC when you say small is it the width you are referring to? What size would you suggest? They will hang lower, I wasn't able to manipulate the picture

    @Beth H. : your thoughts?

sink light, either 5" or 7". I was thinking 5 would be enough light.

option 2 for the dining table

    22" high x 18" wide. Canopy is 5" wide

is the recessed light not enough over the sink? I've never see one like you've posted.

the pendants are fine. either dining room light works. I happen to like Capiz though. (and nice since you're on the water)

    @Beth H. : would you say 2 or 3 pendants?

I think w/that size you could do 3.

    here are some diagrams

3 minis on a small island

def 3 if you are going with those long thin pendants. And capiz over the globe glass all day.

Update: The globe chandelier is not going to work since its 32inches so it won't fit right in the existing electric opening. So basically we'd have to make a new hole which will then leave a hole in the ceiling to patch or plug!

With the capiz I am afraid of breakage and wondering about cleaning? Thoughts

whatever you get is going to need to be cleaned. get one of those hand duster things.

how would it break? just be careful when cleaning

    another option

What do you think between this and the capiz

I'm confused: how does the size of the fixture have anything to do with the junction box in the ceiling and it not fitting?

It's the position of the junction box and the size of the fixture. The fixture is 32inches long so if it hangs from the current box the fixture will not be in the center of the table it will be closer to one end. If I move the table to accommodate the fixture, the table ends up being too close to the wall. Does that make sense?

swag it over, but 3 inches does seem too big

can you post a picture looking straight on at the island and the dining table standing from behind the counter?
