You should get that 10 minute contact paper off of those counters and put in new laminate. That was a waste of effort.

I would find a kitchen cart on wheels so you can move it when you need to get into that cupboard, but gives you a small bit of extra storage.

As for the counters, contact paper won't last but a minute, neither does paint, but if you had laminate counters you can buy sheets of laminate that you glue down on the original laminate. Easy to do and will last you another 15 years.

Put the rattan back up on the wall. It'll be nice with the baskets under the bench. Or get a little coffee cart (if you actually need one--don't do it to fill the space which is fine as it is) and put the rattan stuff on the other wall by the pocket door.

I'd also consider a very small table. You have what we people in midcentury homes call a breakfast nook, and a little table by those windows would be a very nice place to have breakfast.

Unsolicited commentary (since we're all doing it!) follows.

1. I'd like poofier cushions on the bench because the ones you have don't look comfy.

2. Your cabinets are gorgeous. Retro, but good.

I love having a separate coffee station. We have our coffee pot on a nice player and space for canisters with filters and coffee. Looks like you have electricity available behind your cover plate too.

I agree with Fori re putting the rattan pieces back on the wall. I like the baskets under the window seat. You could benefit from some color—find inspiration in a pillow or piece of art you like. Thicker cushions with colorful pillows would really make that area a focal point. You could pull in colors from a large art piece (doesn’t have to be expensive, but about 18x24 to 24x36). Hang it on the wall with the pocket door.

What about looking for a long, narrow trestle type table to use with the bench? — you could push it against the bench when not in use if it is an issue in the walkway. It can also add prep space or serve as a buffet area when you entertain.

Home Depot and Lowe’s can install new laminate countertops, and the investment would be worth it. Since your cabinets are staying, you could look at a neutral or even a colored laminate.

off topic, but LD, what exactly is that piece of furniture you've got for your coffee station? I am intrigued!

It's a receipt cabinet. Behind the coffee pot is a roll top for files. The drawers below have slotted trays for "bills and receipts". Because it's older the proportions worked great for our space.

Thank you all for the recommendations. The interesting thing about the space is that right in the other side of the pocket door is my full size dinning room, with lovely windows so it takes as much work to walk to the bench than to walk to dinning room. That is why I don't have the space set up as an eating kitchen. Two tables within 3meters of each other did not make as much sense to me. I built the bench as extra storage for kid toys and other things.

Like the idea of the laminate. Will replace once the contact paper goes bad. In the meanwhile I think I will hang the rattan baskets back up, and hang the art work I had before I painted on the corner of the bench. Once HomeGoods opens back up I will try to find some more colorful cushions that may go with the art and upgrade the foam on the seat for something thicker. :)

go to a fabricators warehouse and see if they're tossing any scraps or remnants a lot of time if the pieces aren't wide enough, they trash them. for something like this you only need 12-14" deep.

do some DIY open cubbies and some brackets to brace the countertop. or get a piece of wood and use it

I really like a coffee bar/station. This is a picture from houzz. If you don't use those cabinets much you can use pretty much anything that fits the space. Having it on wheels to move easier if you do need something from there or you can just add some kind of shelve for cups, coffee filters and whatever
