Mower won't stay running

Craftsman rear engine rider with 13.5 Briggs engine with new plug, air filter and carb. Starts right up, doesn't run real smooth, after 15-30 seconds it sounds like it clogs up then dies and loud backfire out of the carb. It will start back up no problem then does same thing. Guy that replaced carb said the valves looked fine. Any input where to start?

Our neighbor was having a similar problem with his mower. His mower would start but not run smooth, then die. It turned out to be the gasoline. He was buying a very expensive ethanol-free gas for his mower. However, at $18/gallon that last can apparently had been on the shelf too long. He emptied the tank and refilled with regular from a local station and no more problem. I have no idea if this will help you, but it could be an "ain't got no good gas" situation. Good luck.

I had a similar problem with my tiller... It turned out that the priming bulb had a little crack in it. It would get enough gas on priming to start, but shortly after would stall because of air getting in the line.

Check the vacuum tube. I had a problem w/ a Craftsman mower last summer. Replaced the fuel pump but that didn't fix it. Ended up being the vacuum tube.
