Nice Peonies.Glad you are seeing some scapes!

My Peonies had their last year this year. They always flatten down and look terrible. This year I put pieces of wire fencing around them to keep them standing, and many of the blooms rotted instead of blooming.

Hi Julia,

I discovered scapes this past weekend. My usual suspects are putting them up: SMALL WORLD TNT, DRACULA, SILOAM MELVIN'S YELLOW, HAPPY RETURNS, the various STELLAs (actually Stella in Yellow was blooming this a.m.) THE TRIBBLE WITH BLUE, BALLERINA ON ICE, LILLIAN'S VAPOR TRAIL, etc... Yes it is dry 45 minutes south of you. I was watering two beds this past weekend. I need to hit the other two beds this week.

I actually planted a PURPLE D'ORO yesterday, as one of my colleagues has a nursery and had several left over and I bought a pot for next to nothing. I could not believe how dry this one bed was, as I planted some Monarda last week in the same bed and the soil was still moist.

I always have liked Peonies. I tried one once but the foliage (as predicted), was horrible by mid summer in our heat. So I just look at other peoples and admire theirs. Yours are gorgeous. I like the two tone deep magenta (red?) with the gold stamens in particular.............Maryl

Those Peonies are gorgeous, Julia. It is very dry here, and I am watering some of the beds today....All of them if I get to them all, but if not tomorrow. It is necessaryto water here fairly often it seems, but it makes so much difference in the blooming. That and mulching, but they are wrth it, I guess.

Hurray on finding some scapes! Do you think your season will be later this year? A friend in Wisconsin told me his season will be about three weeks late because of the cold weather sticking around. The peonies are gorgeous. I wish I had room to grow some.

Peony are pretty in someone else’s garden. They aren’t worth trouble or garden space they take for me, same reasons as above. I have lots of scapes, the anticipation is killing me! It’s dry here too, the hose and I are best friends now. It is supposed to get really hot here and rain this weekend.

We’ve already had one cutting of those tootsie rolls! I like seeing them! The peonies are wonderful and so good for you that they stayed upright. And glad you are seeing scapes-won’t be long now!

I do think our season will be a bit later here and I expect possibly shorter than normal scapes with the lack of rain. I gave up on weeding a week ago as the ground is just too hard to pull weeds from. Working on indoor painting.

pretty peonies, I have quite a few but put most of them back where you don't notice the foliage so bad. Was a really good year for peonies this time. Our season has been later here, Julia. funny on scape height, I thought we might see short scapes this year, and I have seen several, but I am also seeing extra tall scapes too. The winds we had last week was hard on some of those tall ones.
