could we see the whole plant ...

and perhaps the back of a leaf with the spots ...

brown spots on the top.. often lead us to a sucking bug on the back ... or aphids in the trees above ...

also.. where are you ... big city name... so we can think about weather and temps... and how much direct sun.. what hours of the day ...

and any other info besides it has black spots.. which might help us.. help you ...

It’s a lovely planting. Ken is the expert here, but in your second picture with your fingers holding the leaf, way down between the leaves I see several little white balls. What are those? Fertilizer or????????

Thank you! Yes, that’s fertilizer! I will remove those, I didn’t even notice them so thank you for pointing that out.

Katy, I am not sure if that is the problem, but I think it could be. As I understand it we fertilize in the spring to help promote growth. We don’t want to fertilize all summer. Anyway, the spots could be related to than or not. Let others chime in. I am guessing.

Ok thank you. I planted this hosta (and the rest of the box) 3 or 4 weeks ago. I’ve always used fertilizer when I’m planting a new plant but I will stop that definitely if it’s not good for the plant!

I am not saying it isn’t good to fertilize, but with hostas I understand we feed early spring to promote healthy growth. After that, mom nature takes over and the fertilizer helps build a strong plant. In the fall we don’t fertilize because we don’t want to encourage growth in a plant that is preparing for dormancy. I am surprised no one else has chimed in here. Well my post will help it move up again.
