Can't see why they shouldn't work. I have some in our zone 5 in pots and they do just fine for the Winters with no protection. If I ever decide I don't want vegetables in my raised beds might have to give that a try too

9 of my largest hostas are in a raised bed. Not sure if it's exactly what you meant- sounds like you might be thinking of something deeper than a foot/ foot and a half.... But they do great there. I give them a thick covering of leaves on each side of the raised garden and on top in the winter. I believe I am zone 4a, near forest lake, mn. I have no bottom to the raised bed. Planting media is mostly sand, mixed with compost/ black dirt/ wood chips blend.

Why would hostas not do just as well in a raised bed as any other plant. Or as in any other planting situation? These are non-fussy plants that can be grown just about anywhere with modest care.

agree with the near impossibility of killing a hosta during the growing season ..

but a z4 winter might be an issue.. depending on exactly what he means by a raised bed ...

we are back to the issue of winter storage of a pot.. or in this case.. maybe a large pot.. otherwise called a raised bed ...

of course if its buried in snow .. there probably isnt any issue ...

I grew an old NOID one in my raised bed where my tortoise lives in the summer. The soil is great in here so it loved it. Only downside is that it was in full sun so it burned pretty badly but it provided nice shade for the tortoise

I also use my other raised bed (where I grow tomatoes in the summer) to overwinter the ones I display in pots in the Summer. They seem to grow/thrive just fine in there before I move them. I have to remove them to put them in the containers and also because my raised bed is in brutal full sun.

We moved since then. I now am building raised beds because I tested for soil drainage and got about 1" in 30 minutes.

A raised bed shouldn't have a bottom. Therefore, should not be a problem for hosta or have drainage problems. If it has a bottom, it's a "pot", no matter the size.
