Here is what I'm using and having the tile setter stack it straight. I think it would great with your slab. The picture doesn't do it justice . . . it is called Shimmer Tile by Best tile. It is glass and metallic, (which you cannot see in the photograph).

Everything depends on your door style if your kitchen leans tradition, modern or transitional. What style door?

I’m almost finished, all but the backsplash, and mine is considered transitional.i have Silestone Calcutta.

I’m going with a 3x12 rather than a traditional 3x6.

Are you getting a 4” backsplash strip of counter material like you have now? If so you are done, no need for tile.

If you are foregoing the 4” splash and going for tile, wait until your counters are installed! You really need to see sample tiles in your space before you choose one. If you are going to choose white, it should match the white of your cabinets. If you are going for gray, pull the color from the counter.

Making the counter and tile look right together means pairing more complex, or simpler profiles in both, so your instinct re: changing the edge profile is right on. You could stick with an eased edge on the counter and pair that with a paseo or lantern shape. Both are simpler, less formal options that fit well in a traditional space. You could go for an ogee edge profile, and pair that with the ogee shaped tile. Both are more complex and ornate and great traditional choices for more formal spaces.

The question is whether you see your kitchen as a more formal space. It’s already such a cute space - I like your before, and I’m sure your after will be lovely.

@eam44 Your advice definitely helped clarify my issue, and I really like the idea and reminder of pairing like with like. I think the brass faucet and quartizite already have some heft to them, and pairing things down with an eased edge and simple tile may be best. Thanks again for the great advice!

@eld6161 The door I chose is in the photo near the cooktop - it's a shaker door with center stile in the classic English style. I'd say it leans toward "simple traditional". Definintely not a modern style door. You can see the tile leaning to the left of the sample cabinet door in the photo. I most often see this style paired with beadboard panel backsplash (which I would LOVE), but it would be a fire hazard with my gas cooktop. (and also difficult to clean).

N S, if you really want beadboard you can find ceramic beadboard tile. This is not easy to find and who knows whether you can find the color you need, but if it’s what you really want, maybe you should try. The gold standard is something I can’t find anymore but maybe you can. It’s called Ceramica Colli Nantucket 8x20 Perline.

Another option is this 8” x 32” Grazia Boiserie Blanco Matt tile

@eam44 that beadboard tile is great. That may be my favorite right now. I posted another pic of my door and hardware, and an inspo pic with the arabesque. thoughts on using the Calcatta gold arabesque tile next to the sample door in my photo to tie all the neutrals together? Torn between that and the beadboard one.

I don't like the marble-ish tile with your counters, the veining will compete. I think I'd prefer the tile in a light, light gray to pick up some of the color in your stone. I do like the "beadboard" tile, but like a curvy shape better.

Thanks for the feedback @megs1030 . I prefer a simpler style as well, but was thinking the calcatta gold may help unite the brass/gray stone/white cabinets. But maybe that's not necessary. All three tones seem to go well and are very neutral. eam44 posted a nicely shaped linen gray tile below that matches the counter perfectly - just not sure if that would be too much gray in what I was envisioning as a warm white with brass accents space. Will keep trying out different combos I think and I will follow the advice below to WAIT until the counters are installed to pick the backsplash. The Mont Blanc actually looked whiter in person than it does in the photo I posted, so another good reason to wait until it's installed.

Are tile shops open in your area? If so, bring your cabinets, hardware, etc and try to figure out what works best. If you can, bring some samples home and look at them in your space. You can also order 5 samples from Tilebar.com for $5. Take your time. Backsplash is the last to go in... mine was installed 6 weeks after my cabinets and counters were in.

It’s really a question of focus. Do you want it on the counter material or on the bs? For most people its the counter material, and that would rule out the Calacatta gold. There’s also a little phenomenon I like to call Stonehenge, which is too much stone in a relatively small space. Even if the colors mesh it ends up looking heavy.

I would stick with a glazed ceramic tile. Beyond that, just keep ordering samples and looking at them in your space. I hope the beadboard tile works out. It’s a gorgeous look.

I have a beautiful piece (IMHO) of Mont Blanc quartzite on hold but no sample to help me with cabinet color in our lighting. I did take some 8" BM paper samples to the warehouse - white dove, cloud nine, simply white, cloud white (shall I go on?), but it was just an awkward way to make a big decision. Or is that the way to go? The slab is warm white with touches of greige (deeper than in picture), and we are going for the clean, transitional look so definitely some sort of white for cabinet. We have a wall of windows facing north in the kitchen (high rise so no trees or other color influences). For those who have used this as kitchen countertop, what was your cabinet color? Other thoughts? Thanks a bunch!

@Jeanette Criswell Oh hi! The process was ridiculously hard for me and it was getting expensive (and wasteful) at $80 a pop to see doors painted with various shades of white. I almost went with Revere Pewter and then one day, I realized that the space was not meant for an all white kitchen and needed a more moody look. It all came together by using BM Flint. The color match wasn't exact which was a blessing in disguise because it made it even better than the swatch. Cabinets go in today!!

Funny, I was eyeing a very similar tile for backsplash but I still dont have an actual sample to see how the whites will tie together. I will have to wait for install...

@bignogginsfarm I'm new to this site. Do you have a page with your kitchen progress, and pictures I may follow? I will look to do the same. We are in the process of finalizing our kitchen remodel layout and currently waiting for the designer to email us the renderings of what we have planned. In the meantime, we are tasked with making final selection of materials. We picked Mont Blanc quartzite for the island and counters, and still considering Cle weathered white zellige or Cloe 5x5 for the backsplash and still need to shop for plumbing and light fixtures.

@Jeanette I don't have a page. I have pictures of before, during, and we haven't gotten to the after part yet. :) Not having worked with a designer, I am making decisions little by little, which works better for me because I hate commitment. Fortunately my contractor and I work really well together...

I am installing Mont Blanc and also considered Calcutta gold but worried it would look to busy. What Backsplash did you go with?

@kiddy04 i really wanted to go with natural stone backsplash because they are all sooo pretty but the mont blanc I have was just off enough that nothing really worked (i tried everything). I ended up finding a greige glass tile and it just pulled it all together. The pic is before the hardware and other details...

@bignogginsfarm could you please advise the exact name of the tile and where you got it. I am in the same dilemma. I have white cabinet with Mont blank quartzite that has some greenish/grayish tone. I think your color should work for me. Thanks!

@Niral Shah and @tris Sorry I just got this question today....Believe it or not, I got it at Lowes. If I recall it was $1.97/tile :) maybe $2.97...made in Vietanam but I don't remember the actual brand... It was an in stock product. Good luck!
