Make the pool as large as budget and yard space allows. Have a deep end greater than 5 feet to allow for actual swimming and retrieving items in deep end, kids love to dive. Swimming around in the deep end and under water is great exercise and builds confidence, horsing around in the shallow end not so much. I have a pool that is shallow on the ends with a bit deeper in the middle for pool volleyball. I have never put up the volleyball net. I would not do that again. Traditional shallow and deep end for me.

I love my in-floor-cleaning system. Would not build a pool without one.

Have an autofill for the pool, also an essential. I have never had to use a garden hose to top of the pool.

Do not forget about aesthetics. You will be looking at the pool far more than actually being in the pool.

Be prepared to go over budget. Think about how much you will want to spend, what kind of pool you want, what materials you want, what you will compromise on and what you will not. Do not forget about landscaping. The pool build will pretty much destroy your yard. I would recommend you come up with a reasonable budget then have at least 50% more $$ available. It is mind boggling how much all of this costs. Some can be done in phases but others cannot.

I also recommend you go on line and look at thousands of pool pictures to help you decide what you really want. When interviewing pool builders or designers ask to see pools they have built, this will help you in selecting your materials.
