What made that hissing noise?

Hello all,

I grew up in Southern California and am reasonably acquainted with all of your basic normal outdoor noises.

Well. Last week, there was this very long, sustained and steady hissing sound coming from an area of ficus trees. As I walked towards it, it cut off for just a second or two maybe, and then continued on. It probably lasted maybe a couple minutes.

My friend couldn't hear it at all, standing next to me ... so perhaps it was at some odd frequency. (I wouldn't know from those.)

We called out the gas company, and the very nice man came with the gizmo, and ... it wasn't the gas.

Thoughts? suggestions? I haven't heard it again but I like to know what is going on out there, if possible. I couldn't see anything. I thought maybe a beehive, but I didn't see those either. But, that could be sort of hidden or blending in - I should look again.

I will say, I've been seeing some unfamiliar birds this spring so maybe this is an insect from somewhere else too. I have never heard of us having cicadas here, f.e.

Thank you in advance for all input.
