remodel my fireplace!!

Hello! Ive posted before and never really gotten anywhere on suggestions for this fireplace so i am trying again. (contractors designers please weigh in!) I'm remodeling the whole room- new furniture, rug decor. We want to put white wood over the brick and make a recessed built in mantel. We either want to put some stone veneer around or white wash or paint white the exposed brick. We just dont know how to design or address the fact that the fireplace is off-center, raised and very large.

Please help! we've wanted to change this for 10 years and we have the time now just need a plan.

Update to this pic! The picture doesnt show but to the left of the fireplace is small matching arch firebox. What do people think of this plan- paint the entire brick white. Put white wood panel (plain) around fireplace and above extending all the way to the right of the wall. To the right of the fireplace which is off center, below where the wood work stops (height of the fireplace) put fake white wood doors and put matching wood door over the woodbox to make it somewhat symetrical and to look like a continuation to blend into the corner cabinet. Paint the cabinet the same color white.

I think that wall is stunning -- would just put a heavy beam mantel across the whole width of it and do nothing more. Very striking feature.

man, I just spent 20 minutes looking for a photo I know is here somewhere. sorry I don't have a better example at hand.

what you're talking about with a concave mantel sounds like a pretty weird bit of carpentry, so I'd try to be sure you don't wreck the brick in case somebody after you would like to free it!

It is a stunning wall. I agree with acm on that. And I also agree with acm re: please don't wreck the brick. Probably the best thing in your case would be to build a facade around the wall since you do not like it. But again, please do that in a manner that will not damage the brick.

Where I am from and where I reside one would pay a premium for a feature like that. If it were my space, I would probably leave it mantle free and unadorned. But mirrors are beautiful on brick and the wall is also a great place to display art.

I see what everyone is saying re leaving it as is- and under other circumstances I would definitely agree. However, if you could see the space in person, the wall is so overpowering as the ceiling height is only 7.5' and the room is very narrow- its is also a pass through room from the kitchen to the foyer so there is essentially only one solid wall (90 degrees to the brick wall). Its just very heavy in the room. Everyone who comes in says its cool but too big for the room and needs something to it.

I realize this picture doesnt look bad but it really is a dark and heavy room anf the rest of the adjoined rooms are lighter. we want it to look light and airy.

It is really difficult to advise, as you say it is off-center but the image doesn't show it. Can you take a picture straight-on?

Here is a link with some ideas and at least pictures of what the brick would like, if you painted it a color. Some of the pics are large surfaces/walls like yours.
