Kitchen light question

last modified: 6 years ago

First time posting here...be gentle :) We are doing some updates to our 80s Kitchen. Believe it or not, the cabinets are great. Good quality cherry wood with shaker design. We are leaving them. But we are gutting everything else. Countertops will be Misterio by Vicostone- quartz. White farmhouse sink. Stainless appliances. (MAY be doing mixed metals-to be determined) BUT my dilemma: We have a hanging antique lamp in a different location left by the original owner. I LOVE it and want to feature it in the kitchen hanging above the sink. Will attach photo. Will this match the stainless? (It's brushed Aluminum-as opposed to shiny stainless) and will it "go" with the modern countertop and stainless appliance look? The cabinets are not "modern" - just worried about mixing too many styles. And not sure it will work if I "mix metals" (brass knobs on range, cabinet hardware and faucet perhaps) It's a 1930s lamp in art deco style. I hesitate to send pics of the current kitchen, because it will look totally different. Opinions?? And opinions on the mixed metal look?

It certainly is a fun piece to hang in your home, but with the renewed kitchen first thing you will no doubt want to send it out to be refurbished to give it a little sparkle. I suppose the classically trained designer might say it doesn’t ‘go‘ with the mysterio counters etc., but if you love it, why not try it out over the sink? Then if you don’t like the ‘look’ you can switch it out for a more compatible fixture. If you truly want to feature the deco light you might try a different counter top that picks up a little of the color in the light fixture.

To me, such a beautiful, decorative, antique light fixture would look out of place hanging over a kitchen sink. I do understand your desire to hang it where you will see it frequently. I would first make the changes to your kitchen then decide whether to hang it there.

Also consider whether the fixture would provide adequate light over your sink.

The light would look fine with a mix of stainless steel and brass.

Seems like it would fit better in foyer or entry? Do you have another space in your house where you could use it?

Go ahead and hang it. Live with it for a couple of months. Does it look okay over the sink?Does it give enough light? Can you change the lightbulbs for more light if needed? Does it clash with the kitchen style? If not in the kitchen, do you need a fixture for the foyer, a hallway, the breakfast area? If you decide not to use it, think about boxing it up carefully for the future: the next house, a friend’s house, a garage sale...

The OP’s light is definitely not garage sale material. Rejuvenation would likely purchase it if the OP no longer wanted it one day. Look at the price of a similar one Rejuvenation is currently selling!

I love the light, but I question ‘over the sink’. I don’t like anything in my face while I’m at the sink especially a light. Over a breakfast table sure but I don’t see it over the sink unless there is something I’m not understanding.

Lol, it looks like the same light as the Rejuvenation one except in a different finish from brass! Perhaps it’s pewter or or even sterling silver?

Gorgeous light! How tall are your ceilings? That's my worry: it's a bit big for over the sink. But mix and match your metals and trust your eye as to what "goes" in your home.

Also, make sure it’s glass and not alabaster. It’s not recommended to hang an alabaster light fixture where it could be exposed to steam/humidity such as in a kitchen or bathroom.

Thanks all for the comments!!! Carolae- good point about alabaster...need to check that! The ceilings are 10' tall, so it won't be directly "over the sink"- and actually, we have a window over the sink-so it will hang just above the window. The amount of light I would get from it is not really a concern-as we have plenty of other lighting -would really just be for appearance. Ideally, placing it elsewhere would be nice- but foyer and dining and all other areas have beautiful lights already- thus the reason for this area. I like the idea of the uniqueness it may bring to the area, and I really do adore the light so I want to see it often! I'll finish the other kitchen remodel first, as suggested, and see if it "fits" the design. The metal is aluminum-the fixture is an original from Lincoln Mfg, the Fleurette line slip-shade. Thanks again!! (more info on this website) http://www.vintagelights.com/product/vintage-lincoln-5-slip-shade-ceiling-fixture.html

It sounds like the previous owner left you more than one beautiful light fixture- I’m glad that you appreciate them! And thank you for sharing that website!
