What size is the tile?

8”x8”. I chose white grout so I’m concerned it’s going to look bad?

We are Renovating from afar so I can’t measure it. it looks great now - but I’m worried we add bright white grout and it’s going to look busy in a bad way :).

I see. Sorry I didn’t understand I might match the grout to the tile instead of bright white. is the tile bright white? It looks off white on my screen. you could also use dark grout to match the brown(?) color.

I don’t think I’d use a bright white grout. I’d use as close a match to the white of the tile as you can get. It looks like they did a really good job laying the tile.

Oddly the bright white was what matched it - but now I’m worried it’s going to be super defined - and big. Thank you all for your help!

You do not specify the size of the grout joint. You can request the smallest joint possible but in the end it is the tiles consistency in size that will determine what is achievable. Manufacturers state recommended joint size. The tile you selected had little chance of a 1/16" joint from the start. A knowledgeable salesperson would have pointed that out.

That’s a great idea. Dumb question but is our tile person able to do this? Or should I be trying to do it?

He/she should happily do that for you. I would have made one up automatically knowing you were undecided on grout.

I agree with Beverly, I think that you should have a sample board made by your tiler with a dark grout close to the black color, and then lighter grout as Creative Tile suggested. You have more black edges than white, and black grout will give a similar appearance to the current ungrouted look. Good luck, and please show us your finished product!

No bright white grout! The grout should match the not-bright-white of the tile or the black of the tile...to blend in and not be obvious.

"Bright White" is just what the brand calls it; it's not necessarily the lightest shade. That said, though, I think black would have been better a option. There's more black in the tile edges than white to meet up with the grout.

Up thread OP said it is bright white that matches. That said sample boards in this case with the white and one with the dark will help you decide.

Just echoing others so you know that white grout will be a big mistake. Match the dark color of the tile so you see that clean crisp pattern. You will accentuate the 8x8 with the white grout which will create visual chaos as Bevs mock up shows.

IMO white grout is never a good choice for floors and in this case the dark will be much better anyway.As for the spacing I am pretty sure the tile was not meant to have 1/16 spacing. IMO the tile setter did what was needed. You chose the wrong color grout that is easily fixed with a phone call and a samples of the dark gray grout that is closeset in color to the dark tile

Ask them to make you are sample board using a few different grouts and to send you a picture from a medium distance away so you can see how it affects the pattern.

Id use a black and i hate black grout! you need a color pulled from the tile and you have but 2 options.

A medium gray grout. Split the difference.

you could have him tape off the black seam and fill in the white with white grout. Allow it to dry, tape off the white seam and fill in the black with black grout. Then you won't mess up the pattern.

I've taped off and used different colored grouts when making mosaics. I know it's time consuming and labor intensive but it is possible to do it is all I'm saying. I would probably go with a gray for this application.

dash,,, these are cement tiles, yes? (not porcelain?) Your tile guy who is grouting has to be very careful using dark grout. Have the tiles been sealed? That's a must prior to grouting.

Also, he can't grout this floor like he would other tile floors (spreading the grout all over the tiles and using a float to push it in the joints). The dark grout will stain the tile. yes, even if sealed it will stain it. To grout w/dark grout, you basically have to pipe it in the joints and quickly clean off any residue. Even the tile manufacturer will tell you the same thing. (they actually advise against using black or dark grout just for this reason)

Do NOT let him spread the dark grout all over the surface of the tiles.

The charcoal or black is the correct color for the grout. I wouldn't do white or gray.

I did mine w/black and even though I was very careful, I got some staining on the edges. I sealed these 3 times before they even went on the wall. If water beads up on the surface of your tile, it's properly sealed. If it doesn't or the tile absorbs the water, NOT sealed.

If you zoom in on this pic you can see the slight dark staining on the rough edges of the grout line. it's unavoidable. Your tiles seem to have a smoother edge than mine did, so you may not have this problem

Yes it's possible. I've certainly combined grout colors taping off. The OP's patterned tile would be a nightmare. Combining white and black grout is as bad as it gets. Let's entertain the idea for a moment. Would it not be easier to grout it all one color and grout stain the second color. Just a thought.
