How to fix this entrance?

Hi...we are trying to figure out how to fix the side entrance on a 1912-built house (Italiante design). The first photo is the main profile of the house, and the other two show what is a side entrance, used the most, close to the street. We will be replacing the door with a vertical grain fir door - Arts & Crafts style with much simpler trim. I feel that the door should be recessed more - for shelter and to draw people in. Moving the door back would be very expensive as it would require removal of the windows on the side. So we are considering extending the walls around the door with some kind of cedar overhang above and posts on either side. The concern is that coming out even further will make this entrance look even more tacked on to the house (it was an add-on by the previous owner). We are wondering how we could make it look more integrated with the roof line. The flat roof above is being refinished now and will have posts and railing to become an upper deck. To the left there is a garage with flat roof, which will have a matching Arts & Crafts style garage door. Any inspiration anyone could offer to fix this entrance would be much appreciated.
