Pruning an old Blush Noisette

We have a large established Blush Noisette that grows as a large shrub. I'm pruning it today (late, I know... it's been ignored for a while) in order to get behind it and see where a raccoon is entering our yard. I'm pruning out all the dead wood, twiggy growth, and crossing center canes. This amounts to a lot of cutting. Will this harm or set it back? When finished I"ll give it a good watering and TLC.

I know this rose isn't pruned like a HT, but what's the correct way to thin and rejuvenate it?
