Hi Joe, I went and checked my Iron Cross and it has those leaves as well. To be honest I have never noticed it before but I don’t expect it’s a problem. My plant has been going for years and has always been healthy and happy. I expect those leaves will fill in with colour but now I will have to keep a watch out to see if they do haha. Btw, the little bulbs multiply easily and I have given away a fair number over the years.

Thanks for the response. Of the 17 I planted (all 17 came up) there are only three that have those markings. I did some more searching and found some sites list these as ‘Reversed Iron Cross’. They seem just as healthy so they will definitely be keepers.

Can you give me some advice on winter care? They will have to come in for the winter.

I grow mine in a container which I put out for the summer and bring in once the threat of frost is getting near. I let mine just die back and go dormant then and store it in a cool spot until early in the spring when I begin to water it again. They soon spring back into life. Every few years I repot with new soil and take out some of the bulbs to pass on to others or store the bulbs in a cool dry spot. They seem to keep very well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I’m in Pa , Zone 6. It gets cold here but usually not lower than about 10 deg f. I store lots of bulbs in their pots overwinter, no water. I’m assuming I’ll do the same with these.

I transplanted the three Reversed Crosses into their own pot this morning. I want to keep them separate from the others this way the bulbs won’t get mixed up when I propagate in spring. It was unbelievable in 8 days since planting they had a very nice root system going on. The roots were between 2-4” and they were actually holding onto clumps of soil. I’m very impressed with the speed of growth of these plants.
