What materials were used for rafters, posts and supports?

I'd like to protect my terrace from the weather using a polycarbonate on top of the roof overhang similar to this design, what is your recommended slope and overlap? Do you think I should leave about 6 inches between the neighbour's firewall and polycarbonate to allow air to circulate? I appreciate your thoughts . . . thanks delia
