Help - living/dining layout ideas around a column

There’s a huge structural column in my living/dining room. What are some other options of layout other than as pictured in the floor plan? I have to work around the column (pictured as a black circle), the pantry (labelled PAN) and the dining table/kitchen island.

    Hi Chantelle,

It’s a challenge alright. If you want to watch TV in the room I think the key is perhaps to get a bracket for the TV that will allow it to swivel out to make viewing more comfortable.

Then it’s down to furniture selection. A small loveseat will be more comfortable for two if you both have something to put your feet up on so think about a footstool with small side tables rather than a coffee table.

An alternative might be two comfortable chairs either side of the column - not very romantic though if you’re a couple. Two chairs would avoid the problem of the sofa obstructing the door to the balcony but it looks a bit less ‘living room’.

You can turn the dining chairs around if you ever need more seating.

Unless you have a custom couch made to bump out where the column is, I think you are ok with the layout as indicated. One thing you can do is get unique with your decor. Have a plan before you go any further. Keep in mind your favorite colors, textures, and themes/styles. I like an eclectic look, so I have a lot of colors in my living room.

Let me clarify. Can we please have the measurements of the counter length and depth, the distance from the pillar to the counter and the distance from the pantry to the exterior door, also the distance from the pillar to the edge of the door. Thank you, Marcie

This is a 3D rendering for your consideration. The placement of the furniture and the rendering's contents are only meant to be suggestions/ possiblities.

In it you will find very small furniture

    1. two 4'3" love seats
    2. One small occasional chair
    3. One 2' 4" square ottoman with storage
    4. One 2' x2' metal side table
    5. two round metal side table that can be used as tv trays
    6. One wall mount ( on the column if possible) or table top TV
    7. One very small table for the TV if you can't mount the TV
    8. One console table with a lower shelf for storage and drawers for additional storage
    9. Two table lamps
    10. Two decorative large vases
    11. One large piece of art

    Hope this helps. Marcie

This was a sketch I had written in measurements I myself did. And the dining table/kitchen island, the pantry and (of course) the column cannot be moved. Thanks for all the help!

The layout still works as noted in an earlier post but as stated with small loveseats or one loveseat and two chairs, your choice. The 3D rendition shows the TV mounted on the pillar and another with the TV sitting on a small table in front of the pillar. Is the pillar 2 or 3 ' deep?

Anyway. Here is another 2D picture of the layout with the measurements that you gave us.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Wishes,

    Marcie

I think the column can be said to be closer to 3 feet deep. The balcony door (at the top of the last drawing) actually opens outwards - it’s a left hand swing outwards... but still I didn’t want to block access to the door too much. Is there any way I can not create so much space by the wall (left of last drawing) ? I wouldn’t need a tv stand if mounting the TV on the column so I’m thinking I’m left with a console table and plants... any other options to add to the space? Also I wanted a large enough rug to delineate the living space from the dining and was aiming for a 4’x6’ rug... but now I’m worried that will be too big in the diagonal couch layout... and a smaller rug will make the space look smaller. I’d appreciate any other suggestions for delineating the space!

only use a strap mount if you mount the tv. do not drill into that column.

Why can’t I drill into the column? I’m allowed to mount the tv by my landlord I just have to cover any holes created.

ask your landlord about it then. I doubt they're ok with drilling into the column. that's a structural column. if you drill into it you could compromise the integrity of the column by exposing or drilling through rebar. there's likely only 2 inches of concrete cover on it before you hit rebar, and once it's exposed to external air or moisture it can start corroding.

Thank you Chantelle I will correct that. Please ask your landlord if he has someone who can install the TV on the column for you. Then the landlord is responsible if anything happens. They usually have someone who does maintenance for them. Good to know about the depth/radius of the column being about 3'. That is what it is set as being in the rendition. thanks. Looking into a way to delineate the two areas but it may not be possible because it is so small in that space. Let's see what can be done.

Chantelle please clarify; are you saying you want more space on the wall leading out to the balcony? In other words; do you want the console table removed from the room?

With the couches in a diagonal pattern it closes off the space that is by the wall... and there’s not much I can put there but a console table/ plants/ art /shelves. Is there a way I can make it more included in the living room space? Since it won’t be used for kitchen or dining either. I don’t mind the console table but was wondering if something more useful could be added to increase the living space.

Here are a couple without the console table and a small thin day bed that can double as a couch. Let me know what you think. I will gladly move more around for you.

I forgot to mention that this is not an ordinary day bed it is a 2' deep bench with matching cushions and pillows. A standard daybed would not work.

    Hello Chantelle,

Here are some more with an open layout. Remember the love seats are only 4'3" wide. Now there is a padded bench seat with large pillows on it as a back rest, against the door side wall.

There is a comfy floor chair in the middle of the room that can be turned if you want to complete a conversation arrangement. Also it's nice because you don't need something to rest your legs on because you have a nice carpeted floor. Yes the carpet is cut away from around the pillar. Unusual spaces call for unusual measures.

There is also a nice floor lamp next to the pantry.

the pictures are on their way.

    Good morning Chantelle,

I forgot to mention that the black & white daybed in an earlier picture is not an ordinary day bed it is a 2' deep bench with matching cushions and pillows. A standard daybed would not work.

Also here is a link for a small couch if you choose to get one similar to the ones in the rendition.

Please know that they come in different colors if you don't like the ones you see.

This is a challenging room for you to work with, I sincerely hope that you find a layout that works well for you.

    Best Wishes,

    Marcie
