The prep will will torture as vinyl requires an absolutely flat floor. That means the grout joints all need to be filled. The tile will I believe need to be abraded so the adhesive will stick.

The short answer is, "Yes." The LONG answer is, "Technically yes, BUT the amount of time and effort and MONEY it takes to make it 'work' is just not worth it....so just jack out the tiles and do it properly."

Just because the flooring sales guy says they can 'go over anything' doesn't mean it SHOULD. The 'sales guy' failed to mention (because he either wanted the sale OR he didn't know...but probably BOTH) the tile floors have to be made FLAT. NO GROUT LINES are allowed to.

It costs roughly $2/sf to jack out tile. It costs roughly $2/sf to FLATTEN the tiled floor. The 'right' way is to remove the tile. The 'possible' way is to flatten the tiles and lay it over top.

Did anyone mention the floor height variation between rooms or the 'clearance' of doorways? Go ahead and ask about that. It is illuminating.
