Probably a tree - look for similar but more mature - and maybe flowering or fruiting - examples in the vicinity.

looks like african tulip Spathodea campanulata. seeds take flight in the wind like a kite and they sprout up root suckers from the ground. if you are on the wet side of the island they are pretty problematic and hard to get rid of. they do have nice flowers though

Looks remarkably similar to Ailanthus altissima, which is just as invasive and as much of a problematic species in Hawaii as it is in most of the continental US.

im not aware of Ailanthus altissima, from a quick google the new growth looks different than the picture above

Not Ailanthus. It lacks the ‘mitten thumbs.’
