Hi . Beautfiul space! When adding art and decorating your bookcases, make sure they flow together. Here is are a couple of examples that work well. One very easy way, if you are not skilled at decorating the shelves is to simply add books.

Some beginning thoughts.

I think you need a bigger rig too, some end tables, and a couple other seating options. Then I would add art and add more colour somehow. If you like the monochrome look which I do too get plants.

You have a painting of your choice over the mantel....now use colors in the painting for accents and accessories in the room: drapes, a few colorful pieces in the bookcase, a couple of solid color pillows, something colorful on the coffee table. Add another piece of art on the large wall on the right and a smaller piece on the small wall between the door and window on the left.

Going bolder. If you dare, you could paint the back of the bookcases blue.

I think a colorful wall succulent would look very fresh and lively and the texture would stand out with the use of those recessed lights. I would leave the rest of the room monochromatic.

Large original artworks are an excellent addition that gives character to any space. Good luck and enjoy decor !

Gorgeous bookcases - I love the arch. As others have suggested, a nice piece of art in whatever colors you love. I also think some grasscloth or textured wallpaper on the back of the bookshelves would look great. Some actually wallpaper a faux back so they don't have to worry about removal. You can also paint the back a color to give the bookcases more depth.

Based on what I can see of the other room in your home it looks like you have a neutral pallet running throughout. I would bring the wing chair in the corner into the seating area facing the coffee table and fireplace on the end and get a second matching chest for where the chair is. I would then lower the mirrors over them about 6". They are to high. I would get a single lamp for each. Single square piece of art over the mantle with the candle holders you have on the chest to one side would be perfect. For you book cases I would do a silver or platinum toned metallic textured wallpaper in the back of them. On the wall behind the sofa I would follow with two LARGE art pieces. Square again would look nice or one large rectangular horizontal piece.Bring in some interesting end tables for people to set drinks on. If ever a room needed a chandelier this one would be lovely with one. Your rug is too small and really it makes the room look unpolished. Bring in a printed rug in neutral tones. Something in an animal print would be fantastic. I would also do the same by bringing in pillows in neutrals and rich fabrics , velvets, linens etc. I would then do simple warm white/ natural single width dummy drapery panels on the windows to finish the room off.

Maybe a giant round piece of art? Wood? Ceramic? Woven?

Nice room! Perhaps try a clock above the mantel and yes the front legs of the furniture should be on top of the rug. The way you have it makes the room look small and cut. Add some color with a throw blanket and pillows! Also, you can paint the fireplace wall (just the wall) a color too and then pick up that color with the pillows or a rug. Have fun...it will look great!
