It’s a herbaceous perennial rather than a tree. It will die down in winter.

Yes, it totally does die in the winter & come back! such a big Woody amount of growth for a few months! THANK YOU!!

Forgive my nit picking but if the growth were truly woody it would not, by definition, die down in winter. Woody means there’s a permanent structure.

Actually it doesn’t. Wood is just secondary growth, laterally an expansion of xylem and phloem, from lateral meristems / vascular cambium. Biologically there is no requirement for “permanency”, and of course wood does die. Woody annuals are uncommon but do occur. Usually they are

plants that would be perennial in warmer climates but die back To the ground in colder zones.

But thalictrum is solely herbaceous growth, not woody. And for woody plants (like Hydrangea macrophylla in my zone) that die back to the ground, that is woody growth, it just dies due to adverse growing conditions.

Actually it does :-) While not precisely botanical terminology, the definition of a "woody plant" is one that produces an above ground framework - the wood - that persists for longer than a single season. And that produces buds or new growth from that persistent wood each spring. Unlike the thalictrum, which will die to the ground in winter. Even if you left the tall stem intact, it would not generate any new growth.

Under no accepted definition is thalictrum considered to be 'woody'.

A perennial which dies to the ground in cold winter climates does not become an annual. It becomes a dead perennial. It does not and cannot change its botanical nature. But I’d be interested in learning more about these ‘woody annuals’. To me that is a contradiction in terms.

Until then I stand by what I said above. Of course wood dies, eventually. But woody plants produce a permant, even if short lived, structure over a period of years by repeated expansion of the same growth. Herbaceous perennials, like that Thalictrum, do not do this. They start afresh each year.
